When people think New York= NYC. They think NYC is the state or something. I was in Mexico and met this couple from the states that actually told me they "don't know where the state of Long Island is".

Yeah, it's confusing when the city is named after the state too. New York, NY.

I wish more people would do research when they travel elsewhere. I want to smack the next person who tells me Fargo is in Minnesota.

Oh, really? I've lived in North Dakota for almost 22 years and last time I checked, Fargo was found in ND. These people are thinking of Moorhead, MN.

This one time a woman told me that she didn't know that Oklahoma was a state. I was shocked by her stupidity.

Hm, I haven't gotten much of that, but I ALWAYS get asked if I'm Jewish when I tell people I'm from Long Island (I'm not, but they think I am).

Try this one on for size - there are Americans who actually think that the state of New Mexico is actually a part of Mexico! *gasp* People who have never been or lived here tend to compliment on how well we speak English!

Geez....learn your geography! We reside in the States!

I never got that myself, but I guess it is only natural to equate NY with NYC. The city is what gives the state its identity I think. Thinking Long Island is a state though is just plain dumb.

Yes!!! OMG...everytime you tell someone you're from NY, you have to verify it with "the state" or they'll think you're from the city automatically. It pisses me off.

Yeah, I'm not from New York, but I've noticed a lot of people having to say New York State instead of New York to avoid confusion.
