Did Joe Smith end up getting the death penalty? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Re-watched this one recently and my ending has the update where he had just been captured. Stack says "If convicted he could be facing the death penalty", so does anyone know the final outcome here?

I don't know the answer to that one but if Kadrmas is reading this maybe he can find out. He's pretty good at researching prisoner information. This crime happened in Las Vegas, Nevada if I recall correctly.

He did get sentenced to death ... and it was upheld when he tried to appeal in October 2006. So he is still on death row.

Yes, indeed Mysterysolver is right Smith is still alive and still on death row in Nevada's Ely State Prison. Smith is currently 66 years old and turns 67 in May. Smith was actually originally convicted of 3 counts of first degree murder, Use of a deadly weapon and attempted murder. He was given two life sentences and one death sentence for the murders that will run concurrently to each other. He has appealed it before and his death sentence and one of his life sentences were upheld however the use of deadly weapon conviction was overturned and the other two charges attempted murder and the 3rd life sentence are currently in limbo. So even if he got off death row he would still be in a life sentence although he could be parole eligible possibly depending on the laws in effect in Nevada at the time of the crime.

The funny thing about this segment is that Joe Smith was played by a man of African American appearance, whereas Joe Smith is of Asian appearance.

This was always a creepy case but I always kind of wondered WHY he killed the wife and two step daughters and TRIED to kill the home owner. He had the reputation as a con man but that's a far cry from murderer. Maybe he wanted to get his hands on Frank Allen's money somehow?
