DEAR FANS OF THE COURTSHIP OF EDDIE'S FATHER:

I would appreciate it if you would post your favorite scene(s) in THE COURTSHIP OF EDDIE'S FATHER? I remember one scene, and I thought it was really cute. When Eddie is playing in a playground at school, and Bill Bixby
who portrays Eddie's father Tom is watching him through a window. Just looking at Bill Bixby face makes me feel real great, he looks like a father who is enjoying watching his child play. Bill Bixby has a concern face also. Bill Bixby seemed to have wonderful father quality about him, he would had made a great father to Christopher Sean Bixby if
Christopher had lived. Bill Bixby should had focus more about having kids, because he would have made an awesome father. Thanks you for your consideration and time, thanks again.

I'm bumping this one up, too.

My favorite dramatic scene (out of episodes 1-4 only) is the following:

From Episode #2 Teacher's Pet

Eddie comes home from school beat up and Tom asks him what happened. (What Tom is doing home at around 3:00 in the afternoon is anybody's guess.) He at first doesn't want to tell Tom why he was in a fight, since the other kids had been teasing him and said some mean things about Tom and the teacher (who are dating) and he doesn't want his dad to feel bad. Finally though, because Tom insists on knowing why he got in a fight, Eddie tells him angrily that the other kids said some "things" about Tom and Miss Allen. Tom then follows him into his room and they have a talk. Tom asks him if the other kids have been giving him a hard time because he's taking out his teacher. Eddie admits that they have, and that they said a whole bunch of "cruddy" things. When Tom tells him some people will always have a whole lot of cruddy things to say about him, Eddie replies, "but they didn't say them about me, they said them about you." (Eddie had just been defending his father and the teacher.) Tom asks if it would be easier on him if he stopped dating his teacher, and Eddie replies (in a way that seems unusually mature for a six-year-old), "You always said, if somebody does something that doesn't hurt anybody else, that's their business. Then you and Miss Allen - that's your business, right? It doesn't matter what the kids say. I won't pay any attention to them anymore." Tom is very touched by this and tenderly tells him he's quite a kid.

(Now, dating the father of one of your students is not a real smart thing for a teacher to do, at the very least. It may even be against school district policy. But we won't get into that. Heck, if I'd been Eddie's teacher and Bill had been interested in me, I would have dated him, too.)

I loved the scene where Eddie's comely maternal Aunt Kate (played by Francine York) is putting Eddie to bed. The kid asks her to sing the same lullaby that her mom used to sing Kate and her own sister when they were children. THen you hear Nillson (the one wh sang the show's themesong) say "if you want to be a cowboy you beter change your mind). And there's some narrative whistling. Something like that anyway. Pretty touching scene.


TJ, please don't be too sure Mr. Bixby would have been a great father in real life had he had more children. Just cause you think he looks reaL fatherly doesn't mean much. Looks are often highly deceiving! And the selfless, full of answers Tom Corbett was the creation of tv and movie writers and producers, not Bixby's reallife persona. Thanx!

I now have the episode you referred to ,"Who Pulled the Blues Right Out of the Horn" where Aunt Kate comes to visit. That is a very touching scene in which Eddie asks her to sing him the lullabye, and then Tom hears it, goes into Eddie's room and forgives her for sort of "corrupting" Eddie that night when she took him out on the town. Actually, the line in the song is "If you want to be a cowboy, you'd better rest awhile..." Very nice song - but if Eddie's grandmother sang it to his mom and his aunt, did she change it to "cowgirl"? Just a crazy thought...

I believe that Bill was a good father to his only son, Christopher, and here's why: Brandon and Bill had genuine affection for each other - this was very obvious on-screen. The words may have been scripted, but the warmth was real. Furthermore, Bill chose to spend extra time with Brandon because he was so fond of him. So, if Bill had the capacity to be this loving toward a child who he wasn't even the parent of, I'm sure he had to be at least as loving and caring toward his own son, and probably even much more so. On the A & E biography about his life, his mom mentioned that he insisted on joint custody after he and Brenda divorced, and Brandon was also interviewed on the program and he emphasized how much Bill loved little Christopher.

I've known people in my life who were good friends to their family whenever they were around with their family. But their time with their biological families was rare. That might have been the real Mr. Bixby.

BUt I also pointed out that Bixby would not probably have had as many answers as a real life father, unlike Tom Corbett, if Chris had lived to be older. Lack of time wasn't the only possible problem Bixby would've probably differed from his scren alterego Tom on.
