Hands down, Barney Miller. Level headed, compassionate, caring and polite, he was the perfect boss. However, he didn't put up with any crap from his cops and wasn't afraid to get in their faces when need be. He had their respect though, and Wojo especially really looked up to Barney.

What about Colonel Sherman T. Potter? As the Commanding Officer of the M*A*S*H 4077th Unit, he commands respect and gets it, and his entire platoon respects him.

Mr. Carlson on WKRP, he didn't have a clue as to what was happening at his
Radio Station. Wouldn't that be a great boss.

That reminds me of Dr. Bob Hartley and Dick Louden, both played by the great Bob Newhart. Both characters were pretty wimpy and let their employees walk all over them. In Bob's case, the therapy group walked all over him too. A case of the inmates running the asylum. It would be fun to work for those characters to see what I could get away with!!

I agree. There have been several good bosses on TV, but Barney Miller was the best, having great leadership qualities--for the reasons you stated. Even Inspector Luggar regarded him as a mentor! You're absolutely correct.

I'd also like to put in honorable mentions for Andy Taylor, Andy Travis (WKRP), Howard Cunningham, Julia Sugarbaker and Sherman T. Potter--all of whom I thought were good bosses.

Yes, Andy Travis of WKRP was a good boss too, plus he was CUTE!!

I wouldn't mind going to work every day if I had a boss who looked like him.
