Actually, I thought they were all pretty good. The show took some criticism on forums such as Jump The Shark for having too much Grady. But I disagree, I think they did a great job carrying on with the show in Redd's absence.

I agree, the fights and exchanges between Grady and Esther were good. Especially when Esther would show up and Grady couldn't remember her name. She'd reply, "It's Esther, fool". And Grady would say, "Ah, yes, Esther Fool".

I really didn't like the Grady/Esther interactions. The writers gave Grady Fred's lines and it just didn't work. Grady could not deliver like Fred.

I'm just watching these episodes again for the first time in many many years and they are off. Redd Foxx made this show and Grady worked better here as a supporting player. It's no coincidence they stopped taping before a live audience midway through the Grady replaces Fred era (in some of the ones in late year 3 the audience seems like they don't know when to laugh).

In defense of Grady the pilot for his spinoff was a good episode. I would've watched that series (I actually did see an episode or 2 but I was very young in 1975-76 and have no memory of it).

The best Grady episode is the one where he gets the extra social security checks.
