Starring Julia Roberts as Beckie Parker, a single mom and owner of the local diner in her Georgia hometown. Beckie lives with her 17-year-old son, Eric (Rami Malek) and her 14-year-old daughter, Maddie (Emma Roberts). Beckie and the kids have now moved on and are doing great with each other. Eric is a senior in high school and Maddie is a freshman in high school. Eric is also gay and maintains a great relationship with his boyfriend of three months, Dylan (Jackson Rathbone). Beckie (and Maddie) love the fact that Eric and Dylan are together and happy. Beckie runs the diner with her cousin and best friend, Claire (Lauren Graham). Beckie is also currently dating Jeff (George Clooney)-the local hardware store's owner. Eric and Dylan's mutual best friend, Calleigh (Scout Taylor-Compton) is always hanging out at the Parker home with Eric and Dylan. Beckie is like a mother-figure to Calleigh, who's own mother died when she was 7 and she lives with her single dad, Andy (Treat Williams).

Ep1: Pilot Episode:
Eric and Dylan go out to celebrate their three-months of dating by going out to eat and a movie, then going back and hanging out at Dylan's house. Beckie gets upset with Maddie when she learns Maddie got an "F" on an essay that she had the potential to ace.

Ep2: The Harvest Festival:
The town's annual Harvest Festival is here again. Beckie and Jeff go down there and meet up with Claire and her new boyfriend, Dave. The four bump into a former girlfriend of Dave's, who informs Claire and the rest about his past- he had jail time for theft--which frightens Claire enough to dump him in front of everyone. Meanwhile, Eric, Dylan, and Calleigh bump into a couple of jerks who give Eric and Dylan a hard time for being a gay couple, yet Calleigh won't rest until the guys apologize to her friends.

Ep3: Making Amends?:
Beckie's ex-husband, Rick (Tim Matheson) re-appears, after being absent for the past three years, and wants to make amends with Beckie, Eric, and Maddie. Turns out, Rick's second marriage (with his mistress) just recently failed. Beckie just wants Rick to leave, Maddie has nothing to say to her dad (which breaks his heart), and Eric also wants nothing to do with his dad and wants him to leave-after Rick calls Eric's coming-out as "just a phase".

Ep4: Live, Laugh, and Love:
Beckie and Claire reminicize about their teenage years, after going to a Bruce Springsteen concert recently. Jeff and Calleigh's dad-Andy join a men's bowling league with two other buddies of theirs. Meanwhile, Calleigh's new boyfriend, Ryan (Ryan Pinkston) is "okay" with Eric and Dylan being gay, he claims he can "tolerate" them better when separated and not together when they hang out with him and Calleigh. Calleigh really likes Ryan, and is put in an awkward position to choose her boyfriend or her best friends. Calleigh is about to dump Ryan, when he confesses he's going put his own prejudices aside for Calleigh's sake--which makes her happy and all she asks is if he can at least attempt to make friends with Eric and Dylan.
