Talking Please, cross your fingers and say a prayer

After a year of working at a bank, I finally quit my job in November with the intention of going to grad school. It's really frustrating being in the workplace today with just a bachelor's degree. You really only find jobs that you could have had in highschool, or you need a master's degree for. So I've applied to get my master's in English literature, and I should be hearing back from the schools anytime this month. I'm really, really nervous because I don't have a good backup plan.

But I spent a year at a pointless job because my parents told me it was "safe." I decided that sometimes we gotta jump for what we want, you know? Wish me luck, and say a prayer please

Good luck! I've also found what you said to be true, but I have zero desire to get a Master's in anything.

Ah! You don't need luck! Just your natural tenacity and desire for something better.

Don't overheat your brain...

Good Luck in your pursuit of a master degree. Funny you should mention that you are quiting your job in banking to obtain a masters degree. Last year at teachers college one of my fellow classmates quit his job in banking after 22 years to obtain a masters in education. He was the oldest student in our class but our class admired him for taking such a risk and leaving a high paying profession to do something that will bring him peace of mind. Now he has a masters in education and is certified to teach. I admire your decision to pursue higher education in order to better your career opportunities.

I don't think I'll get into Northwestern, I hope I'll get into Penn State, and I should get into Maine

Wow, that's funny. I'm glad it's worked for someone else, that's encouraging. My parents both ordered me not to quit, but I knew I had to do it. Banking pays very well, it is a professional job, but it's not my field and that gets very frustrating. They also don't really hire based on education. People who had never gone to college were getting higher positions with more money, and I decided this is not the reason I went to school. Hopefully I'll be able to get a PhD eventually, and teach in universities. I know I'd be a lot happier in the end.
