I've seen this segment, as well.....I didn't think he was still going with his ministries, I thought he was more in hiding.

I checked for Tony Alamo on the net. You can add bigamist and spouse abuser to his "resume", which already includes tax evader, child abuser and threating to kidnap a judge. I came across an anti-Alamo message board that appears to have former members of his flock posting on there. Apparently, his jail time hasn't changed him at all.

I don't remember Tony Alamo? Was he featured on UM? If so, can someone be kind enough to give me some background on this case?
Thanks everyone, Christopher |

Tony Alamo was a self styled preacher who was something of a evangilist in line with Jerry Falwell. He was also a bit of a screwball as his methods of keeping control over his church members ranged from lying to intimidation. He once ordered a child with epilepsy to be beaten several times daily due to the fact that Alamo believed the child was possessed by the devil.
He really seemed to go off the deep end when his wife passed away in the early 80s to the point when he began to preach to his church members that he and his wife were divine entities and Jesus was going to raise his wife from the dead as an example of a modern miracle. He was also somewhat of a self promoter in other arenas as well, making record albums and custom designed jackets which ended up selling quite well in the late 80s. The jackets however were also controversial as they were produced by members of Alamo's church and the church members recieved little to no compensation for their work. At the time UM aired the Alamo case, he was in hiding from the authorities I believe because of tax evasion. He was eventually captured down the line and later released after serving a short prison term. Its sickening that this man is still practicing his form of religion. He is truly the definition of a man who took the basic tenants of a religion, suited them to his own needs and then tried to pass off his interpretation of that religion as the word of God all the while making a tidy profit for himself. Lifetime has never aired the Alamo case, but several members here have copies through tape trading. |

You can bid on his jackets and record albums on ebay, although I can't imagine anyone wanting to, unless they're a fan of rare memoribilia.
In addition to receiving little or no compensation for their work on the jackets, Alamo's followers also endured work shifts that ran upwards of 14+ hours a day. Basically, sweatshop conditions. |

To plug CD's collection yet again, the Tony Alamo segment is on one of her volumes.
I would KILL for one of his jackets! The sad part is, I could only wear it around you guys because you're the only ones who would appreciate it. ![]() P.S. *SCREECH!* Tony Alamo used to deliver newspapers in Helena, Montana! Oh... small small world. |

The jackets are expensive, the most expensive one I saw on there was for $1200. The labor costs to make the jacket were probably 1200, cents that is. Quite the return on investment I should say. |

man, I never took a good look at my avatar until just now. Look at the look Tony is giving Kim Morrison. seems a bit inappropriate for a religious album.
