Default Here is the PROOF of the falling popularity of the NHL

All the shows below did better in the ratings than the NHL All Star Game last wednesday-lol

HGTV's-"Design on a Dime"
Discovery's-"Myth Busters"
Bravo's-"Top Chef"
The Food network-"Ace of Cakes"
TVland's-"Andy Griffith"

LOL-Information from Today's USA today. I knew for a long time that the NHL is UNWATCHABLE

The vast majority of NHL coverage is on Versus (formerly OLN), a channel that's resigned to Game Show Network territory (IE: Digital) on most cable systems, doesn't even have *great* carriage with satellite...certainly a lot smaller than ESPN.

And today I hear that Versus (owned by Crapcast..er...Comcast) and the NHL have agreed to a rights extension. Is the NHL stupid? Keeping the NHL on that 2nd tier channel is hurting the league even more than the lock-out did.

For a lot of the media in the US, knocking the NHL is the "in thing" to do.

I couldn't even find the game on a US Network. I didn't know the game was on OLN until I saw this thread.

I also wondered, why was the game on a Wednesday?

I will always be a hockey fan & i don't care who watches. Hockey is a great sport & if the media wasn't so unwilling to cover the sport you would see how great it is. One of the most thrilling things in sports is a hockey playoff game in OT

You obviously haven't seen hockey since the lockout a couple years back. I watched the Nashville Predators / St. Louis Blues game the other night. Nashville's the top team in the western conference (Yes, Nashville's considered in the west for some reason...). St. Louis, also Western, is a lower-mid-tier team at best in the Conf. Final score was Nashville 6, St. Louis 3. It only seems like there's no scoring because they only award one point per goal. If you want to be like the NFL and award 6 for a goal (pre-PAT), that would make the score 36-18, which is not too shabby. Maybe you'd like hockey better if Dallas was a quality team and the team from Philly tended to trip on it's own feet...oh wait, Dallas is a team that always does well, and if the season ended today would be in the playoffs, while the Philadelphia Flyers are EASILY the worst team in the league.

Any sport in which a Philly team is that god-awful can't be THAT bad, CAN it Solomon?

Hockey needs a new Wayne Gretsky, badly.

Yeah that's a GOOD THNG, Philly Sports Media is talking about the Phillies and 76ers, not the Flyers-lol

If I were the Philly Sports Media, I wouldn't be talking about the Flyers either. They're 12-32/5 (the 5 being OT losses, which are better than losses but worse than wins - they're the current equiv. of ties). When you win 12 games out of 49 played, regardless of sport - that's a BAD thing.

Hopefully Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin can bring in some new hockey fans. I agree with Mriggles, playoff hockey is extremely exciting especially if the game goes to overtime.

I know the league is trying hard to market the game in the States but the reality is the NHL has never been a hit even when shown on major channels like NBC and Fox. It's too bad such a wonderful sport does not get the same respect in the States compared to Football, Baseball, and Basketball.
