Question about a Richard thomas movie

I was just over on IMDB, the message board for Richard thomas, and one member of the board had a question about a movie that Richard Thomas did a long time ago where he and his family were sitting down at dinner, when there was a brush fire outside their house, eveyone gets out except for him. But he doesn't die in the fire, the rest of his family does. Anyway, they also said that later on in the movie he kills himself(or so they think)that and his character he plays in this movie is jewish. Can anyone figure what the name of this movie is? I was just going through his movie list on IMDB and I couldn't find anything that was similar to what this person said. Thanks!
