I been been approached to buy

phone books (yes, they are free)

The coat literally off someone's back

A TV that takes ten minutes to come on

Bootleg DVDs and CDs (Always)

Bus passes

Cigarettes

Jewelry

Lots of other stuff I will think of later. Why can't someone sell me something I need and want?

well one of my guy friends was approached by a man who wanted to sell him a video camera. he really did not need one but it was a great price. it was in teh box but the dude was like you can't look at it but you have it for $100 -- well my dumb friend bought it and it was a hoax -- it was something wrapped like a video camera. haha. we still laugh at him

I was approached by a guy to buy boys Levi pants. They were my son's size and I know that in the store I would have paid almost $25 for each. I got two pairs for $20!!!!!

One of my close friends became a distributor for a skin and hair care product Company, which was the rage about 20 years ago. She drove everyone around her nuts, constantly hyping the product. I was happy to oblige, but there's only so much stuff you can buy, and it was pricey as hell. She wanted everyone to buy the product for Christmas gifts, Mother's Day, you name it.

Not only that, but she wanted everyone to take the books to work (similiar to the Avon books). She actually got mad at me because I told her that the company I worked for had a no solicitation policy. Then she really cranked up the pressure by trying to recruit everyone to become distributors too. Just to shut her up, I attended a couple of their seminars. She was possessed and obsessed for a good two years. People dreaded being around her. We were all at a wedding once, and she told a friend that her hands looked dry and she had just the product to take care of it.

She ended up losing her shirt and filing for bankruptcy. True story. She rarely mentioned it after it all ended. I think she was embarrassed. It was almost cult-like behavior on her part.

As you probably suspect, most of these "sellers" were drug feins. They would sell anything for money to get a hit. The phone book thing was the one that got me.

But no, I've never been offered things like that. I've bought a lot of junk in the past (damn door to door people), but nothing like a junkie pushing phone books.

Some idiot with a phony French accent tried selling me a stupid nail file/polisher with useless liquids for like $60, when you can get something just as good at Target for $1.

And another time a couple of asshats with a lame vacuum cleaner came into my mom's home to sell their slightly-better-than-a-normal-vacuum vacuum for around $1,000. The presentation was supposed to last 1 hour, but 3 hours later I was telling them to get the hell out of the house.

All the d*** time. (and I wonder how it is with our non-American SO friends). In the United States it's almost a way of life, an obsession, not only to sell, but to convince people they need to buy what it is they are selling.
