What was the first Sitcom "Spinoff"? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I don't know the answer to this one - but it will be interesting to see what kind of response this generates. Does anyone know (or have a guess) regarding the first Sitcom to be spun off from another show?

I'm guessing "Pete and Gladys", which was a spinoff of "December Bride".

hmmm....I think I heard the first spinoff was The Andy Griffith Show. It was a spinoff of The Danny Thomas Show, so I think that will be my answer.

That would be hard, since "Pete & Gladys" & "The Andy Griffith Show" both premired in 1960.

Since a lot of people consider "The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour" a spinoff ("The Brady Bunch Hour" is a spinoff, why not this?), maybe it's the first spinoff?

I think that the first spinoff was The Adventures Of Champion which was a spinoff of The Gene Autry Show. The Adventures Of Champion premiered in 1955.

I am unsure if "The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour" was a spin-off or not. Others tend to think it was more of a continuation of "I Love Lucy".

I saw that show once! I got this free tape from a guy who ownes a video store and it was supposed to be an episode of Joe Palooka but it was The Adventures of Champion instead.

BTW, what's Joe Palooka anyway?

"Joe Palooka" was a comic strip from quite a few years ago. He was a professional boxer. In the 1930s/1940s (well before my time!) there was a series of Joe Palooka films produced. One of the recurring characters was Joe's butler, named "Knobby Walsh". Knobby was played by Shemp Howard of "Three Stooges" fame.
