I beleive the first season of The Facts of Life had a big cast and that is one of the reasons in the second season they fired alot of the cast to make the cast smaller.

In a word, well, three, if we're talking atg a time-
MY THREE SONS.

Fred MacMurray,. Bub, and the three sons, then the nerdy kid with the departure of Mike, then Uncle Charley as replacement, thene everyone gets married, even Steve (MacMurray), except Bub (1960-=1965) and Charley, and Ernie, who remained bachelors.

As for over a period of time, I'll use my fondness for pre-1970 shows as example.
The radio versions of Jack Benny and Amos and Andy (though the character gimmicks of the first were either Frank Nelson, Verna Felton, etc. playing character who mutally shared each actor's shtick, or celebs like Phil Harris playing THEMSEVES, and some celebs were just refeenced..)
