I have made my decision on how to handle the problem in the last thread I posted (about my grandmother), and I have one more question of advice to ask of you guys. About that one, I am going to talk to my aunt about it and advise her to do something.

This one involves my algebra teacher. His classroom smells really bad, sometimes so bad that I can't concentrate on my work because the smell is so strong. He has to be about 70 years old, and sweats a lot as well. I can smell this awful odor (which is a mix of body odor and ****) from the second I open the door to go into his class. Obviously, everyone else notices the smell too, and comments rudely about it behind the teacher's back. On some days, the smell isn't so bad but then there's a smell in the room that smells like rotten milk. A lot of odd smells are present in that classroom on different days.

I want to talk to the teacher about getting an air freshener, some kind of room spray, or sanitation for the room, so me and the rest of the class don't have to smell my teacher's natural odors. Would it be rude of me to do this? should I talk to the principal about asking the teacher to put in air fresheners, or should I mind my own business?

To mind your own business would be a conveniently easy way of avoiding a potential conflict.

Just talk to him. Explain that the smell in the room makes it hard for you to concentrate. Be tactful. Be polite. But if you don't do it, nobody else will.

If I don't say something, nobody else will. Everyone else makes comments behind the teacher's back, which isn't going to get rid of the smell. I don't know how to say something. I don't know whether to tell another teacher to tell him, write an anonymous note, or tell the teacher to his face.

Maybe you could tell the principal or another teacher even. This way you don't have to do it, but someone else will.

I decided to send an anonymous email or note to the principal of my school. It states that there is a very offensive odor in that particular classroom and that many other students have complained about it.

Michael, you seem like a polite, considerate person, so if you do bring this up with the teacher yourself, I'm sure you'd manage to be tactful about it. You'd just have to find a way to go about it without hurting his feelings.

But if you don't want to do it, then yes, it might best to ask another teacher to have a word with him. If you wanted, you could even ask the teacher not to tell him that it was you who brought up the subject.

I saved a draft of an anonymous email that I am sending from my Yahoo account, which doesn't have my name attached to it. I am sending it to the principal. What do you think of this? I took the teacher's name out when I reposted, btw.

There is a very strong odor in Mr. __________'s classroom that does not exist in any of the other classrooms. Many other students have complained about an offensive smell in his classroom, and I feel something should be done about this. Some kind of deodorization or sanitation may be necessary to get rid of the odor, but it does need to be taken care of. Another way to check this is to have the room deodorized and then periodically checked, to make sure the smell does not return. I am surprised that none of the other teachers have commented on this. I would describe the odor as a mixture of several unpleasant natural scents, that my nostrils do not wish to smell daily.

That sounds fine to me, except if I were writing it, instead of putting "should be taken care of", I'd put "that people would appreciate being taken care of." That way, it sounds more like you're asking and less like an order.

But you don't have to change it. Your email is well-written and polite.

I am just hoping that someone traces the problem to the teacher's poor hygiene, because a mix of cleaning problems and B.O. will still be disgusting.

That made me laugh for some reason. Everyone does really poorly in his class, I could easily use the putrid smell as an excuse for that.

That looks pretty good. I really don't think there is a possible way to tell your teacher directly without him getting offended, so I like the idea of sending this to your principal.

I'd probably do something with that part in bold...that just sounds kind of silly.

I think I suffered quite a bit in MY high school biology class, years ago. We were dissecting worms, and the stench of formaldehyde was so overwhelming I couldn't attend class.
