How do you quit a job? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Me and my husband have decided that for my mental-health sake, I am putting in my notice on Monday. However, I have NEVER quit a job before! How do you go about "putting in a two week notice"? Do you type up a letter and hand it to him, or what?? I'm confused, and so nervous, and so scared at the same time.

I'd just tell them to sit and spin. But, I don't think that's the right way of doing it

A letter of resignation would probably be best. Also, having a talk with your boss and establishing the two week notice deal is a good idea too. Going out on a high note is always the smart thing.

Telling your boss to go **** himself and never showing up again is not the way to do it.

Trust me.

This is what I had planned on saying to him.

Typing up an official letter (what the hell are you suppose to say in those things) and saying something along these lines:

"I have been going back to school full time for the past year for my Education degree, and the classes are geting to the point where I am just not going to be able to work full time and do school full time", and just give it to him.

Instead of:

I hate you. Can't stand you, blah blah blah.

That sounds fine. You don't need to write the great American novel. Short and sweet and maintain your professionalism.

Yeah...what you have does sound fine.

Just type it up...then sit down with your boss and basically tell him/her face-to-face that you appreciate all that the job has done for you and the opportunity to learn and grow, etc.

Just be as polite, gracious, and professional as possible because some day, you may need to use them as a reference or you may need a letter of recommendation.

That is very good advice, even if you absolutely hate your boss try not to burn any bridges. You never know when you will meet up with him or a friend of his in the workforce.

no, i don't want to leave in a bad way. I might need him for a reference in the future, and plus, I want to be professional about it.

That's fine. I would give it to him face to face. I think it's best to end on a good note. You never know if you might have to go back and work at the company again and plus, you want good references.

Here are a few links to some sample resignation letters. I'd make it as professional as possible. It will no doubt go into your personnel file. You may have an exit interview with HR. No matter how tempting, don't say anything disparaging about your boss or the company. Don't burn any bridges.

I'm sorry you've been unhappy in your job, but I'm glad for you that you've made a decision. I've been there Mel. I had a job that was so stressful, that I often broke down in tears at the dinner table. My husband used to say, "Just quit!" I finally did, and what a liberating feeling.

Just one of the MANY advantages of having a husband.

I called my last boss and left a message. lol I'm terrible with face-to-face. Plus, it was only part time anyway. Time before that I just walked out and brought back a letter, to which I then got yelled at. I should have just left with those wackos.
