Default Crown Heights and Los Angeles riots

Do you guys remember these riots? I certaintly do. Both times were very memorable for me.

Crown Heights- As usual, I was spending my summers in New York. One day in August, a Guyanese boy was killed by a Hasidim. It got very ugly, and my mom demanded me come back to LA immediately.

Los Angeles- this was based from Rodney King. This time, my mom had me go to New York until it had calmed down. I never returned to school that school year .

My childhood was very memorable. I just wanted to thank my mom for letting me skip school for several weeks .

Strange you should mention the L.A. Riot. I was watching that from what I taped. I have about four six-hour tapes of the riot. It started on April 29, 1992. Sad to watch, but it sure was dumb for the rioters to burn their own neighborhoods!

I was watching the whole thing from New York. My mom refused to have me within 3000 miles of LA lol.

The L.A. riots were concetrated in North Long Beach, Watts, Compton, and South Central. Did she really have to send you out?

By the time it happened I had moved, but I used to live one block away from the car accident that set off the Crown Heights uprising. It wasn't a bad area. Blacks and Hasidic Jews co-existed nicely in that community up to that point, or at least while I was still there.

From what I remember, Professor Leonard Jeffries was killing that co-existance before this, with his far-fetched allegations of Jewish involvement in the transformation of Africans into slaves, and the popularity of offensive racial stereotyped blacks in movies.

My mom tends to overact in certain situations. Since I'm her only child, I guess it was understandable. Today, I understand why she sent me to New York, but then, I was like WTF?

I grew up in Inglewood, a better area than Compton or Watts, but I guess my mom wanted me in New York, so she knew I would be safe.

I'm only going by my own personal experiences while living there, as opposed to what Leonard Jeffries said. I was right there on Carroll Street between Utica and Schnectady for 13 years and from my standpoint, there hadn't been a beef between Blacks and Jews in the neighborhood at that time. It's unfortunate that one developed though.

There was no beef prior to August 1991. I was in Coney Island at the time, so I didn't witness the incident, but it got very ugly. I remember I was playing basketball at Brighton Beach with some neighborhood kids and a few older guys, and when I got home, it was all over TV. No one could believe it. It was very sudden.
