I know this isn't a widely talked about or remembered show, but it was one of my favorites growing up in the 80s. I remember watching when we were home on school vacations. I think the host was Jim Perry (?).
Anyone else remember the show? |

I could never recall the show, or how it's played, but I always loved the NAME of the show. How exciting! The Sale of the Century!

I was lucky enough to be a contestant back in the fall of 1985. Although I didn't win the game, I bought an "instant bargain" and won two "Fame Games," a little cash, and those oh-so-lovely parting gifts. Ended up with about $1,600 total. A fun experience, and Jim Perry and Summer Bartholomew were very nice to work with!

Jim Perry was the perfect choice as host of the 80s version of Sale of the Century. He kept the game moving at a fast pace and was great at enticing the contestants to go for the Instant Bargains by lowering the price and offering cash. He was also very adept at handling the Speed Round at the end of the game.

it was a great show, Jim Perry the host actually lives (or lived) in the next town over from me in NJ. I bumped into him a few times many moons ago. He was a very nice guy & he said to me then that he wishes that show had a longer run. He said Card Sharks was fun, but sale of the century was his favorite. |

The USA Network used to air several game shows (including Sale of the Century) during the early and mid 90's.
I remember getting fired from work one morning, coming home all upset and depressed. When I turned on the TV to take my mind off my misfortune, I saw myself on the episode of Sale I was on years earlier. One of the best things about being on Sale of the Century was occasionally working with the show's producers (Reg Grundy Prods.) to develop concepts for new shows. They used former contestants as game-players, and asked for feedback on the new games. We even shot a pilot for ABC called "Run for the Money." Even though I "won" $20,000 on the pilot, we were paid $100 as "talent." It was a great deal of fun, and it's a hoot to show the tape of it (and "Sale") to friends. |
