Default Lionel Is Dead at 57 (Mike Evans)

I'm shocked no one posted this yet. I just heard this on ABC radio that actor Michael Evans, who acted in All In The Family and The Jeffersons, died of throat cancer at 57!!

UNREAL! He's not even that old and the guy who played his dad (Sherman Helmsley) is doing fine.

Does anyone have a pic of what he looked like recently or even in the last 10 years??

As I do recall, Michael Evans was the first Lionel Jefferson, and for a time, he was succeded by Damon Evans. I'm not sure if either was related in real life, but all condolences to Michael Evans' family.

Default Wow, so young too

TWENTYNINE PALMS, California (AP) -- Actor Mike Evans, best known as Lionel Jefferson in the TV sitcoms "All in the Family" and "The Jeffersons," has died. He was 57.

Evans died of throat cancer December 14 at his mother's home in Twentynine Palms, said his niece, Chrystal Evans.
Evans, along with Eric Monte, also created and wrote for "Good Times," one of the first TV sitcoms that featured a primarily black cast.

Michael Jonas Evans was born November 3, 1949, in Salisbury, North Carolina. His father, Theodore Evans Sr., was a dentist while his mother, Annie Sue Evans, was a school teacher.
The family moved to Los Angeles when Evans was a child.

He studied acting at Los Angeles City College before getting the role of Lionel Jefferson in 1970s situation comedy "All in the Family."
Evans kept the role of Lionel when "The Jeffersons" launched in 1975. The hit show was a spinoff featuring bigoted Archie Bunker's black neighbors in Queens who "move on up to the East Side" of Manhattan.

Evans was replaced by Damon Evans (no relation) for four years, then he returned to the series from 1979 to 1981.
He also acted in the 1976 TV miniseries "Rich Man, Poor Man" and made guest appearances on the TV series "Love, American Style" and "The Streets of San Francisco." His last role was in a 2000 episode of "Walker, Texas Ranger."
In recent years he had invested in real estate in Southern California.

There was no relation between Mike Evans and Damon Evans. Just a coincidental sharing of last names. I'm sorry to hear of his passing. I wonder why his family waited so late to go public of his death. Condolences to the Evans' Family during their time of greiving during this season.

Is it true that he rejected the Jeffersons after he left and didn't want anything to do with it? If so, why not??? Did he just reject ALL acting?

Also, the article says he returned as Lionel from 1979 to 1981. Does that mean from 1982 to 1985 there was NO Lionel at all in the Jeffersons??

The article mentions Damon Evans as playing the SECOND Lionel.

Franklin Cover earlier in February and now Mike Evans. A very sad year for the cast of The Jeffersons.

I just saw it on the LA Times website and wasn't sure if anyone had posted it or not. I usually try to keep up with news such as this using several resources. I didn't see it mentioned on Yahoo news but then again their top entertainment story is the Hilary Duff Barbie doll. Thanks for posting Big3's, He was the only Lionel as far as I'm concerned.
