Relating to Relatives

Starring Christina Applegate and Juliette Lewis as Kellie Saunders and Sheryl Lincoln, who are two close-knit Chicago cousins who work together at a smalltown bookstore that is owned by Kellie's mom, Betty (Diane Keaton). Kellie is a 30-year-old former advertising executive who was canned, due to her affair with her boss was made publicized. Sheryl is a 30-year-old ex-cocktail waitress with a past history of wrong choices. Betty was left to take care of and raise her then-teenage niece (Sheryl) when her twin sister (a single mother) committed suicide years ago. Betty raised Sheryl as if she was her own daughter. Betty's first husband/Kellie's dad had left them when the girls were in their early-twenties for a Vegas showgirl (while in Vegas, celebrating their 25th anniversary). A strong-willed, independent Betty finally re-married a contracter named Tom (Patrick Duffy) who is well-liked by both Kellie and Sheryl (not to mention, Betty too!). Tom has an illegitimite teenage son, Sean (Ryan Pinkston). Betty, Tom, and Sean live in a beautiful house in a suburban subdivision, as where Kellie and Sheryl live in an average downtown Chicago studio apartment together. To add to the craziness of the family, Sheryl can't seem to rid of her needy ex-husband, Jake (David Schwimmer), who made the ultimate mistake of having an affair and impregnanting his mistress. Jake owns the coffee shop across the street from the bookstore.
