If you have, how noticeable is the difference between standard and hi-def? As far as HDTV goes, I believe they eliminate the on-screen promos that run while the show is in progress on regular tv.

I have an HDTV, and the difference in picture quality is quite remarkable. I've had mine for over a year, and it still makes my jaw drop when I'm watching certain programs.
As for the on-screen promos, it depends on which channel you're watching. TNTHD still airs them, for example. It's actually the worst of the HD channels, because they sometimes take 4x3 images and stretch them to 16x9. The result, as you can imagine is quite yucky. One of the drawbacks is that there's not a lot of selection yet as far as HD channels go. But that just might be my area (I subscribe to Comcast, and Spokane isn't exactly a metropolis, and a lot of people here don't have HD sets yet). As of December 20, 2006, the only HD channels we get are: KREM-HD (our local CBS affiliate) KXLY-HD (our local ABC affiliate) KHQ-HD (our local NBC affiliate) KSPS-HD (our local PBS station) KSKN-HD (our local CW affiliate) KAYU-HD (our local Fox affiliate) HBO-HD Cinemax-HD Showtime-HD The Movie Channel-HD Starz-HD ESPN-HD ESPN 2-HD Universal HD MHD (neat channel that shows music-oriented programming from MTV, VH1 and CMT in high-def). TNT-HD Discovery HD Theatre INHD That's not a lot of selection when you take into consideration that five of those channels are subscription only, and that the local stations only show programming in high def during prime time and for sporting events. On the plus side, though, there is an increasing amount of programming in high def On Demand, including free and PPV movies. On a side note, I wish we had HD Net. |

Thanks for the info, AKA. Not to promote illegal activities or anything, but what little I've seen of a HD picture was from something downloaded online, and if it looks this good on a computer screen, I can only imagine what it looks like on an HD set. With the program I saw, there were no bugs or promos, so I thought maybe that was a thing they did on all HD programming.
I'm sure you'll be getting access to more HD channels, it seems like that's where the industry's headed. I initially thought I wouldn't upgrade, but I'm considering it now. |
