Default Question for Facts of Life Fans about the episode-"The First Time"

I will be getting the NBC episode of this episode in the mail soon and I found out the story wasn;t only written for the Natalie character because Lisa Welchel didn;t want to do the episode. I wanted to know do you feel this was a ODD storyline for the Natalie and that it only should have been for the Blair character? I probably won't be able to stop from laughing when watching this

In all honesty, I actually like that it was about Natalie as opposed to Blair. I of course would have liked to see Blair in the episode, but I don't think the episode would have been that OOC for any of the four.

All were supposed to be in their early 20's, all had or had had serious relationships where realistically sex would be an issue.

Heck, Natalie had been dating Snake for quite awhile. Tootie had contemplated sex a few times over the years. Jo had had a serious relationship with her much older professor, not to mention contemplated living with her boyfriend at the beginning of the season. Blair almost got engaged to Cliff. So it's hard for me to believe in a way that this is the first any of them are dealing with losing their virginity.

Actually, the way Blair was written in later years it actually seemed like of the four she would probably have been the biggest tease. Or maybe Tootie. So I actually think the story made the most sense for either Nat or Jo.

I thinnk that probably she just would have been the last to lose it. Like raya just said, the girls were way old enought o be having sex. And unless it was mentioned in that episode that any of the others ones were still virgins, then I had just assumed they all had already had sex.

I DON'T THINK ANY OF THE GIRLS HAD SEX PRIOR TO THIS. I HAD THOUGHT ABOUT THIS BEFORE.

TOOTIE DIDN'T-ALMOST, BUT DIDN'T. BLAIR DIDN'T-WAS ALWAYS A TEASE, AS SHE SAID, AND NEVER LET HER DATE KISS HER ON THE FIRST DATE. (AND ON A PERSONAL NOTE-I DON'T THINK LISA WOULD'VE WANTED IT ASSUMED REMOTELY THAT BLAIR HAD SEX BEFORE MARRIAGE) JO-IF ANYONE WOULD HAVE, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN HER. BUT I THINK WHEN SHE WAS YOUNGER, LIKE WITH EDDIE, AND NOT AS SHE GREW UP. BY THAT TIME, HER HEAD WAS ON MORE STRAIGHT AND WAS VERY PRINCIPLED.

EVEN WHEN I READ COMMENTS AFTER THIS ORIGINALLY AIRED, THAT NATALIE WOULD HAVE BEEN THE LAST PERSON (I GUESS BECAUSE SHE WAS OVERWEIGHT), MY FIRST INSTINCT WAS, NO, SHE WOULD SEEM THE LOGICAL CHOICE TO ME, AND JO THE LAST, BECAUSE JO WOULDN'T DO THAT.

ALTHOUGH, I WILL SAY, WHEN NAT ASKED JO WHAT SHE THOUGHT OF THE WHOLE SITUATION, AND JO SAID IT'S NONE OF HER BUSINESS; AND WHEN BLAIR ASKED FOR JO'S OPINION ON MONICA'S POSSIBLE ABORTION, JO AGAIN REPLIED IT'S NONE OF HER BUSINESS, IT GAVE ME REASON TO PAUSE. MY THINKING WAS THAT JO HAS GONE THROUGH SOME STUFF NO ONE KNEW OF, AND SPOKE FROM EXPERIENCE; OTHERWISE SHE FELT IT REALLY WASN'T HER PLACE TO SAY. IT WAS UP TO THEMSELVES TO DRAW THEIR OWN CONCLUSIONS, AND BECAUSE THEY RESPECTED HER, SHE DID NOT WANT WHAT SHE HAD TO SAY TO INFLUENCE THEM IN ANY WAY.

MY THOUGHT IS IF THIS HAD REALLY HAPPENED BEFORE, IT WOULD'VE BEEN DISCUSSED. EVERYTHING ELSE WAS, AND THIS IS SUCH AN IMPORTANT ISSUE, I DON'T THINK THE WRITER'S WOULD LET US ASSUME OTHERS HAD LOST THEIR VIRGINITY BEFORE. BESIDES, I THINK THE POINT OF "THE FIRST TIME" WAS MEANT AS THE FIRST TIME OF ALL THE GIRLS. NOT JUST NAT'S.

JUST MY OWN PERSONAL THOUGHTS & OBSERVATIONS

The way they write the episode, we are definitely supposed to presume that Natalie is the first to lose her virginity.

Somewhere in the 9th season, Tootie does outwardly say that she is waiting for marriage. But at least she does contemplate the issue a few times over the years.

Jo's initial almost shocked reaction to Natalie makes one presume she hasn't had sex either. But beyond that there is a line in the episode where Rick/Jo get married where they are hassling over the wedding and Rick makes a comment about the wedding night, once again implying that they haven't gone there yet.

But I also always find it interesting that as soon as Rick/Jo tie the knot, the show then had no problem making fairly innocent type sex jokes at Jo's expense. I guess since she was married, it was considered okay.

Blair it's never really mentioned, but that probably has more to do with Lisa's beliefs than Blair.

Though I disagree with Jo Jr. in that if it were any of the girls I would have seen it as Nat or Jo first. Just because Jo tended to get herself into more serious relationships than Blair. Jo dated less guys, but more intensely if that makes any sense.

Why? Because Natalie is an overweight white girl? Hey, if you can like Judith Cohen (an overweight white girl) for her singing and talent, then Natalie can have a boyfriend and lose her virginity.

Solomon, you have a one track mind.

She may have been nerdy in the beginning, but by this season, she had really grown up and was no longer the young Natalie.

I totally agree, and snake wasn't bad looking . I thought that the episode fit Natalie better than Blair. I can't picture Blair talking to Beverly Ann about losing her virginity the way Natalie did.

This is one of my all time favorite episodes.

I'm glad one of them actually had sex, it was hard to believe that all of the girls had long term boyfriends and no one was getting any. At least Natalie broke that mold.
