Where in the Name of Mary Richards is Season Five?

Now that the sets have no effort put into them by Fox, I grow less and less patient each day (same with PHE's effortless releases like CHEERS and FRASIER). WHERE IS SEASON FIVE ALREADY?

Hi , I am a MTM big fan since I was a child..
I am looking forward for season 5...I have emailed FOX and didn't have the answer yet..

First off, welcome klalmoon! I think it's great that we have another big MTM fan on the boards. Many people have tried to get an answer out of Fox, but the sad fact of the matter is that they just don't care about our pleas. They have the mentality like a husband has when his wife asks him to put out the trash: "I'll get to it when I get to it." (sighs) In other words, if Fox FEELS like it, they'll release season five, but otherwise, they won't be bothered with it. They feel it's a "dead" show, that it has no more life to it and nobody cares about it anymore. Here's to hoping a bigwig wakes up one morning and says, "Wait a minute, we haven't released The Mary Tyler Moore Show's fifth season yet! Something has to be done about this!"

Until then, I still need to get season four and I'll make sure I take my time with the set, keeping in mind that season five might take a LONG, LONG time to make its way to my shelf.

Thank you..I am a big fan since the show starts, I was a kid but i remember watching the reruns since I am from Brazil.. No that I live in US I tried to watch on TV land but for some reason they just have MASH.....Boring..lol sorry MASH fans but I just don't like the Show.
I would like to know if there any MTM in VHS seasons 5/6/7? I watch every night before going to bed the seasons 1 to 4, relaxes me...my husband sometimes watches with me..I am just tired of watching over and over so I am dying waiting for the nexts seasons..........

First off, Nice to see new faces here. Now, things don't look good on the MTM DVD front. Fox seems reluctant to continue the seasons due to "poor sales." *Rolls eyes* I've been telling people they need to e-mail Fox at Foxdrop@4icc.com and tell them you want it! They almost didn't even release Season 2, so I think this can be done.

As for eps. on VHS, I have them, but can't copy. Perhaps someone else here can, though. You might try the Tape Trading board.

my budget allows. I'd love to see all the seasons get released.

those guys are just selling home-made copies of the show (which probably originated from trading circles) in fancy packages at ridiculous prices

others have said that they are often less-than-truthful about the completeness and quality of their sets, and just on that page I see one MAJOR lie - that their DVD's are both PAL & NTSC compatible - but that's not possible

I know that the wait is frustrating, but I am sure that eventually we will get the rest of this series on DVD, and in the meantime it wouldn't hurt to send FOX an email

I read an article the other day in the newspaper. The author compared sales of TMTMS to a newer show like My Name is Earl. The sales of Earl were around 350,000 for season 1, while all four sets of Mary combined were less than that. So it appears low sales will keep us from any more seasons of MTM.

Whoa folks, I think some of you are jumping the gun. The show isn't doomed at all. The sales figures of the show are comparatively similar to other sales figures of other classic TV shows. I think the article was just explaining why the show isn't FOX's top priority, that's all. It may take a year or even longer, but we'll get Season 5 before long. Just have faith folks...

I like that attitude, Ed! I agree completely. Didn't it take, like, 3 years for us to get Season two? In in the meantime, a quick e-mail to Fox might help move things along.

Well, Season 2 was a different story. I do recall that Season 1's sales were so bad that FOX culled any plans for Season 2. They they saw how SONY's classic TV was doing well, albeit in a $20-$30 range instead of FOX's original $40-$50 range. They tried Season 2 with less expensive packaging, re-released Season 1 with an affordable price, and saw that there was indeed an audience for the show. How else would we have gotten Seasons 3 & 4?

I think the show is selling somewhat within their expectations. The show, being highly respected as a classic above classics, would've gotten some publicity had FOX made the decision to not release any more seasons. We just got spoiled for a second there because Seasons 3 & 4 came out within 5 months of each other after Season 2. That's pretty fast for a classic TV show that won't break any records saleswise.

What disturbs me though are some fans who criticize FOX for not releasing Season 5, when they haven't even bought Season 4 yet. Well duh... If more fans continue to do that, then no wonder FOX is stalling. People who put off purchasing a season only make the situation worse. FOX interprets the lack of sales as customers losing interest. What else should they think? Would any of us continue to spend money putting out a TV show if we thought people were losing interest in it? Of course not. FOX being a rich company doesn't matter. Like any company, they stay rich by being sensible about their investments. They don't owe any of us a DVD set if they're bound to lose money on it. If they go under, where would that get us? Maybe we'd get Season 5 or even Season 6 but what about Season 7? How about the spinoffs? How would we get Rhoda and Lou Grant (and possibly even Phyllis) if the company no longer exists? Their DVD division has stock holders like any other company, and they have to answer to them ultimately. If something fails to sell, they pull the plug. The Mary Tyler Moore Show isn't a failure, it just isn't a hit, and so FOX is just giving the show a rest for now. That's a lot different than an official cancellation.

The article was just explaining why some classic TV shows can't afford to give in to huge music royalty fees, unlike current shows like One Tree Hill or Smallville, simply because older shows are not in huge demand. There would be no way to recoup their expense. They wouldn't even break out even, let alone see a profit. That isn't greed on their part but good business sense. Paramount has been going through the same ordeal with their shows Happy Days and Laverne & Shirley and their Season 1 releases of both shows lost a LOT more than FOX's investment on Season of The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

Something else to consider. The delay on Season 5 may work to our benefit. Think about it. Every show, no matter how popular, usually doesn't sell the later seasons as well as the earlier ones. It's a fact. But what helped Season's 2 release was the long wait after Season 1 and the threat that it would never come out at all. Then FOX releases Seasons 3 and then 4 relatively quickly and now you have fans saying "I haven't bought Season 4 yet. Where's Season 5?". FOX probably figures sit on the releases for a while so people will be hungry again for the show, and nothing stirs that hunger than the threat of a show not coming out with more releases. The delay may be deliberate on FOX's end. We just have to go along with the game. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. So folks, if you haven't bought all of the seasons yet and you feel FOX should get on the ball, then it's time to put your money where your mouth is and do your part.

Take care all and keep the faith. Email FOX and please, those of you who haven't bought all of the seasons yet, try to purchase them as soon as you're able to. That can only help our cause and will accomplish more than emails. Like any company, $$ signs make the most impact...

The first part of this paragraph isn't by any chance directed towards me, is it? I've searched and searched in stores and haven't found season four, and since I don't have a credit card, I can't buy it online. I can't wait to get it in my hands, but at the same time, I also can't wait for news on the show's DVD continuation. What's wrong with that? I am NOT one of those fans who just blatantly sits out until the next season is announced, because that's dumb (see my thoughts on the WKRP DVD and see what I mean). I'm always in support for the shows that I love, even if the next season is nowhere in sight.
