Default The Agony and the Ecstasy

I've been very happily going through Season 4 and came across a rather remarkable sequence. Two episodes follow each other, the first absolutely one of the best in the entire series, "I Confess", where Darrin suggests they tell the whole world about Sam's "witchness" and she provides him with a dream showing what that would cause. (David White is particularly great in this episode. "I want to rule the world!")

This is followed by the absolute worst episode in the series(not counting, of course, the entirety of the nauseating Dick Sargeant years, which isn't "Bewitched" at all): "A Majority of Two". Apart from being one of the many Year 4 shows without Dick York, it seems to have been written by a ******** racist with no sense of humor. (Perhaps written by the 21-year-old George W. Bush, if he could write.) In this one, Larry is trying to get the account of a Japanese Electronics company. The head of the company is a Mr. Mishimoto, played by -- yes, that's right -- by Richard Hayden, he of the Christopher Plummer's best friend role in "The Sound of Music". I know what you're thinking: "There were Japanese people in The Sound of Music???" Of course not. And they don't even try to make this idiot look Japanese. (Except for some very bad "tan" make-up, which is weird since Japanese people have lighter skin than most Caucasians.) This Mishimoto proceeds to be inscrutable, and velly velly solemn, and walks funny. Like all Japanese people, of course.

Anyway, what a piece of foul junk. They even have Mishimoto hook-up at the end with a Japanese stewardess -- played by a Chinese actress! (All the same, right? This episode must have been cast by the same dipwads who cast "Memoirs of a Geisha".)

Go figure, huh? How could a writing and directing team that created such an elegant, sophisticated show come up with something this bad and stupid?

(Also, to see just how important Dick York was to the greatness of "Bewitched", you must watch Year 4 in its entirety and in sequence. The episodes where he is missing due to his bad back show how much he was missed, and would be forever after they tanked it with that horrible stiff known as Dick Sargeant.)

I agree they should have used real Japanese actors, but Elizabeth Montgomery makes up for the goofs.

You really should leave political opinions off the "Bewitched" board. Why are you hinting that Bush is a "******** racist?" He has appointed more minorities to his cabinet than any other U.S. president in history and his grade point average was higher than John Kerry's. What does that make Kerry... "very ********?" You should stick with making comments on TV shows only.

And, I agree... I like the "I Confess" episode very much, but I like "If They Never Met" even better.
