Thumbs up The Draft Dodger

This is one of my all time favorite episodes. It had a great combination of comedy and drama.

I have to agree, it was way better than the Beverly LaSalle episode, that episode was just plain sad and depressing.

both are EXCELLENT episodes

The Draft Dodger was SO POWERFUL at the time because of all the tensions and divisions in the nation

BUT at the same time when Beverly was killed and Edith lost faith--- that wa a classic too and i loved how Mike, the Atheist was the one to restore ediths faith with his speech about God and how he viewed God (if there was one) through edith

I like this episode. The mix of comedy and drama made it a classic. If it wasn't for Pinky Peterson, I'm sure that Archie would have kicked David out of the house.

Default The Draft Dodger

Ive never seen it documented anywhere but does anyone know why Archie's 'freak out' is censored?

He clearly says "Goddamn It" but "rotten damn" was overdubbed in (I assume) post production.

I just found it strange because AITF already broke that taboo three seasons earlier in the "We're Having a Heat Wave" episode and its not as if they abused saying Goddman it after that.

Now this is just a theory and we won't know until the episode is officially released in the season 7 set but was this re-recorded for syndication? Originally, whenever We're Having a Heat Wave aired, that scene with Archie saying GD was cut (it was restored in favor of editing out other scenes when it first played Nick at Nite back in the late 90s). Or is it possible that the network didn't want that said in a Christmas episode? I know that may be a little far fetched after how many barriers the season broke down by season 7 but its just another thought.

I just got through reading the book about Norman Lear and the author makes mention (or suggests) that Archie does indeed say GD in the Draft Dodger episode and he clearly does...however it is dubbed over.

The overdub...for me, actually takes a small bite out of the punch of his delivery. His tone clearly drops in the overdub and then goes back up when it goes back to the original audio.

Anyone have any knowledge or input on this?

Thanks....Happy Holidays!

It was mine too in that season given it was one of the worst seasons of the show. In that particular episode Carroll O'Connor turned in a powerful performance as Archie Bunker. I felt the power of his wage and passion about dodging the draft. I believe the audience felt the power too when he went off. Carroll's face transformed when he went into a rage about the war and it was not one of Archie Bunker's usual rants and putting his foot in his mouth but it was a issue strong passion. Carroll brought that out in his performance.
That episode definitely belonged to Carroll.

They usually censor"God Damn" nowadays because it's breaking one of the ten commandments "Thy shall not use the Lord's name in vain".
