In the first season episode "Lumpy Rutherford," which aired this morning, Lumpy is portrayed as a huge bully, older than the rest of the kids. They mention that he is 16. Wally is supposed to be 12 and in 8th grade (I turned 14 in 8th), and Beaver is supposed to be 7 and in 2nd grade.
After they get in trouble, Beaver asks if there is reform school for kindergardeners. If he is 7, why would he ask that? Then when Wally is older, Lumpy is in school with Wally and Eddie, apparently in the same grade. I think they ran against each other for a school office. In real life, Frank Bank is older than Tony Dow by 3 years, off by one day. I guess on TV they age at a different rate than the rest of us!

They did say that Lumpy flunked a grade, but that doesn't make up for the 3 or 4 year difference.

In "Wally's Pug Nose" from Season Two, Wally states that Lumpy had been a sophmore 2 times.

In the earlier episodes, Lumpy is more of a bully, especially toward Beaver and his friends. As the series, progresses, he's less of a bully but he's still a lousy student.

I figured at first Lumpy was a bully who picked on Wally and the Beaver, and who was a few years older than Wally . Later on in the series run, the writers decided to make Lumpy a friend of Wally and Eddie and the same age as they were . Like we've often said, the writers probably didn't expect the viewers to notice these things and think about them fifty years after the episodes first aired .

While I love the "Barrel Hoops" Episode, showing Lumpy as a bully, I love Lumpy the classmate that much better. They made him as a big stupid kid who cries for "Daddy" when he gets in trouble, at 17! LOL!
That is priceless! And Richard Deacon's role as Fred Rutherford was incredible casting with Frank and he in scenes together. This made Lumpy so memorable! By making him the stupid doofus, and Fred being there to react to it, the writers could do more with Lumpy's character, than if he would have been mean-spirited. The already had Eddie Haskell for that. Jack |

Its funny because at the beginning of the series Wally was afraid of Lumpy. Towards the end Lumpy was afraid of Wally. In some episodes Lumpy would actually back down from Wally.

Yea! Lumpy from a distance looks like a bully, but close up his just this doofus! What episode is it where I think Beaver and Gilbert are talking about Lumpy. and Gilbert says, "Lumpy's a pretty big guy, he could scare anybody away." And Beaver says, " From the back he looks scary, but from the front he just looks like a stupid kid!" Hahahahahahahaha!! Many people could make see Lumpy for the oaf that he was! But he was a funny oaf! Gilbert: (Staring at Lumpy for a long time.) Lumpy: "What are you staring at me for, Gilbert? Gilbert: "My mother keeps telling me not to grow up like you and I just wanted to see what she meant." LOL! Beaver: (answering the door.) Lumpy: "Hey, is Wally home?" Beaver: "What do you want him for?" Lumpy: "Just get your brother before I report you to Captain Kangaroo." LOL! Beaver: (Yelling Upstairs) "Hey Wally! Goofy Lumpy is here!" Lumpy: "I thought I told you to never call me that. My name is Clarence." Beaver: (Yelling Upstairs) "Hey Wally, goofy CLARENCE is here!" LOL! Jack PS. I also love the Captain Kangaroo reference, cuz that's a show that Lumpy watches! |
