Keith slapped her? Right after Keith slapped her, Thelma looked at Michael with a sad, disappointed, shocked, upset look. why did she stare at Michael right before running to her room?

It's hard to say without seeing the episode. It sounds like the worst part about her getting hit was Michael having to see it happen.

Actually I thought that was excellent nonspeaking acting by Thelma and Michael.
From the onset of Season 6, and the introduction of the Keith character, Michael's character became the most protective and defensive of his sister. There are a couple of scenes in earlier season 6 episodes where Michael stands up to Keith in the name of a family member, most notably, the scene after the wedding when they brought Keith home from the hospital, and Keith starts verbally insulting JJ and then Thelma. If I recall, Michael jumped up and said, "hold on. you aint married to my sister long enough to start yelling at her!" If you really followed the family's journey in Season 6, you can interpret that Michael was quite protective against Keith. After the slap, Thelma knew that, if anyone was going to comfront Keith, it would definitely be Micheal. I would also chalk that scene up to to not-so-great video shooting. Remember, we can't see the whole stage. Micheal probably leaped out of his chair or did something that was not shown on camera. Remember, the last shot of Michael before the slap, he was sitting down calmly at the dinner table. Thelma was probably reacting to Michael's physical response, not depicted on camera. It was shot moreso like a theater scene rather than a TV sitcom. Overall, the expression on Thelma's face was a combination of shame, shock, and fear that it was "bout to go down." This episode was Thelma's best acting performance on the show, in my opinion. |
