My favorite episodes are from the first couple of seasons. One of my favorite episodes has to be the pilot episode when Katie is arrested for shoplifting..

I find it hard to pick favorites of the sitcom. I have all of them on tape, by pure luck if not by wisdom, and to pick one is so unfair to all the work done for others. I will state it here however, I would like to start some polls, if this is fine with everyone. (I just showed up today, seems I would have been here ever sense this started if someone told me about it.) I just got back from a True or False Test on this issue of 'Gimmie a Break' and it was nice to relive those days.

I have the vast majority on tape, and two of my favorites are the one where Nell discovers Katie is seeing a married man, and the other had to be when Mama Maybelle had the eye operation.

Although I haven't seen the show in a long time, my fave episode is the one where Nell has a problem with her phone bill and the guy who works for the phone company calls her "Mrs. Fong". I think I remember her slamming the door to the phone company's office and all of the pictures fall off of the wall.

The one where Samantha thought she was pregnant when she kissed a boy. Nell freaked out. It was funny.

It's hard to choose just one, but my
favorites are, when Katie was part of
a band, when Katie shoplifted, when Julie
was smoking, when Samantha was dating some guy and he left her on a beach, when
Katie was having a problem with a DUI or
something like that(it's to prevent children), the one where Julie and her
boyfriend got married and the one where
Nell and her friend was on Wheel of Fortune. Sorry this was a long list, I
liked alot of them.

I haven't seen this show in a long whole, not since USA dropped it for some stupid stuff, but I do remember some eps:

- The first episode: the standout was when the goldfish got sucked up in teh vacuum cleaner

- The Episode where Nell pays an unforgettable visit to the phone company: All hell broke loose the minute her phone got taken out

- The Andy Gibbs episode

- The episode where Samantha thought the world was gonna end if she doesn't go over to Herbie's house

- Nell tells the truth by hypnosis

- The New York two-parter episode with Nell and Addy

- The epsiode where we see how Nell came to live at the Kanisky house

- The episode where Julie and Jonathan go skiing in the mountains and Nell catches them

- The episode where evryone ends up leaving the house and heads over to Katie's apartment

- The episode where the Chief dies and Joey plays with toy trains in the chief's room.

- The Man from Zoron

- The episode where Nell gets shot by the Chief's old gun

- The Two-part episode where everyone leaves Glenlawn for new lives

- Harry the hamster

- The episode with the racist kid host. Nell taught him a lesson he ever forgot

I loved the episode where Katie went to the hospital due to her use of an IUD. The interactions Nell had with the cranky nurse were priceless, but the way she dealt with the chatty woman on the pay-phone really sent this one over the top! The woman kept talking to her friend Mildred and would not let Nell use the phone (even when "Mildred" ran to answer her doorbell!), so Nell took her purse and hung it on a gurney, allowing her to use the phone as the gurney rolled away.

"Hello Mildred? Oh girl I hate your guts! Yeah and I don't ever want to talk to you again!!!"

How could you guys forget the one with Nell, Addy and Joey visiting Alabama for the wedding of Nell's sister Loretta? That one was a classic, especially when the girls sang a 60's medley.

My other favorites are Julie liking a guy but he happened to like Katie, and Sam having Joey wearing blackface to Nell's choir program.

Default Nell goes to jail and calls the press

I think it was the first episode from the second season. The one where Nell gets pissed off and pulls the telephone chord out of the wall! She gets arrested and dresses up like a "woe as me" Mammy-like maid whose being discriminated against--and it works! (Maybe there is some cultural symbolism to this)

I was lucky enough to see the filming of a "Gimme A Break" episode in 1985!
It was so much fun watching how the whole process worked. Even the cast members hung around and signed autographs!

I can't believe this show isn't being shown on Nick at Nite, TV Land or Hallmark! Maybe it is because people say the show is "racist" and demeaning towards African Americans. I always thought the show dealt with these themes and racial issues in a positive, constructive manner. It has been so long since I've seen an episode, that I can't think of any examples of how they dealt with these racial subject matters.

Does the "Blackface" episode deal with racism? Was it "Racist?" Should this show be banned? Is this show banned due to so-called racist undertones?
