Does anyone rememer the episode where Regine considered getting a breast reduction? How did the writers deal with that issue? What terminology did they use? I wonder if Kim Fields has considered breast reduction in real life. I'm not trying to be vulgar, I was just wondering since I never saw the episode.

I remember that episode.. but I am not sure of any special terminology that was used. I do remember that the reason she was geeting it was because she was having back problems. It all coincided with the fact that Kim Fields was having the surgury in real life.

That episode is a major milestone in 90s TV because it was one of the first sitcoms to address the physical toll of a "curvy" physique with both humor and medical realism. The Season 2 episode "My Cups Runneth Over" handled the topic by grounding it in Regine's health rather than just aesthetics.
How the Writers Handled It The Catalyst: They focused on chronic back pain. Regine, known for her vanity and love of high fashion, admitted that no amount of "designer support" could fix the physical strain. The Tone: They balanced the "touchy" nature of the subject by having the roommates react with their typical banter—Max made jokes, while Sinclaire was predictably concerned—but ultimately, the show treated it as a medical necessity. The Terminology: The show was relatively straightforward for 1994 broadcast standards. They primarily used the term "breast reduction" and discussed the procedure in the context of "relieving the burden" on her back and spine. The Kim Fields Connection Your memory is spot on—the storyline was written specifically to accommodate Kim Fields' real-life surgery. Real-Life Reason: Kim Fields has been very open in interviews, including her memoir Blessed Life, stating she suffered from severe back pain and found it difficult to find clothes that fit her petite frame. The Transition: She underwent the procedure during the hiatus between Season 1 and Season 2. The writers decided to write it into the show rather than trying to hide her new silhouette behind "baggy sweaters and large purses." It was a rare moment where a character's physical transformation wasn't just a "plot twist" but a reflection of the actress's personal health journey |
