What's the story behind the TEAM you like in the NFL or NBA? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Do you like that certain team because of YOUR PARENTS? I heard on the radio that most kids are forced to like the teams their parents like and then get used to rooting for that team. That didn't happen with me because my parents were not into sports. What about you?

My story dates back to 1980. I was six years old & my grandfather who was a die hard giant fan took me to the eagles vs giants game at the meadowlands. He knew the head of security at the stadium in those days & he was able to manage to get me down on the field before the game & watch the teams warm up. I had a football & a giants pennant with me & i tried to get a whole bunch of autographs but every single giant player ignored me & barely even looked at me. Then the eagle players came out & 4 of them stopped & promised me that they would sign my football when they finished warming up. I had no idea at the time who these guys were but they did come back & sign my football. One of them turned out to be none other than jaws himself!!!! At that age a nice gesture like that means alot to a kid & from that day foward my blood turned from red to green. The funny thing was my grandfather was a die hard giants fan, as big a giants fan as I have ever met & he had such hope of turning me into a clone of himself, & that backfired in his face big time & to the day he died in 2001, we would have absolute family feuds over the giants & the eagles. At least for his sake the last 9 times they played in his lifetime his giants beat my eagles.

I know that my father was a sports fan, but I wasn't close to him, so I couldn't even tell you what teams he liked, no clue. The teams I like, I became a fan of on my own. The Knicks because they're a hometown team, The Mets because that's who I watched when I became a baseball fan in the '80s. Other teams I'll root for because they have a player I like (like the 76ers because of Iverson). I have no NFL team I like.

I was telling someone the other day, You don;t have to like a team just because they are in your hometown-lol You are free to like any team you want.

My father was a Baltimore Colt fan ( he's a Raven fan now), my Mom liked the Pittsburgh Steelers, I had cousins who are Philadelphia Eagle fans and even some Uncles and I grew up in Washington Redskin country in NC long before the Panthers so naturally I became a Dallas Cowboys fan.

I was always a western fan...I grew up on tv westerns so it was no stretch for me to pick the Cowboys. I considered them an all- American team and Roger Staulbach was a QB you could admire not to mention Tom Landry as a coach. I just started watching them and got to know the players. I think SB X when they lost to Pittsburgh and I was so heartbroken...that's when I knew for sure I was a Cowboy fan and I have been one ever since through good times and bad.

I am a Detroit fan due both in part to the fact that it is my hometown and that's what I was brought up with. My grandpa had Lions season tickets and my dad always had the game on every Sunday. Lions football was just a tradition in my house and it stuck with my brothers and I and all three of us will always be Lions fans.

When I was seven, my mother bought me some Redskins mittens. Then I started watching football from that point on. My 3 older brothers were Cowboy fans, and I knew I didn't like them. So I got into the sport, grew up watching and loving Joe Theisman, John Riggins, Charlie Brown, Daryl Green, Alvin Garrett, The Hoggs, The Smurfs, The Fun Bunch, Dave Butz, Russ Grimm, and of course, Joe Gibbs. Been a fan ever since and haven't looked back.

I started rooting for the Chargers back in 1994. I can remember when kids at my school were showing team spirit and there was a lot of support. They got to the Super Bowl but lost to the 49ers. One thing I remember was that the janitor at the school was a 49ers fan. It doesn't sound significant but it was a school where almost everyone knew the teachers, noon duty supervisors, and staff. Plus I'm a San Diego native and I didn't really have other teams to root for so I've been a Chargers fan since then, even when they downright sucked during the Mike Riley years (before Marty Schottenheimer) and when they went 1-15 a few years ago.

There was an interesting thing that happened during the Chargers/49ers Super Bowl year. There was a Home Improvement episode that was centered around the Super Bowl game and they were rooting for the 49ERS! It was a funny episode, though, once I was able to get past that and understand what made it funny (Tim and his friends couldn't watch it because the TV went on the fritz and Jill had the flu)

I've always just enjoyed a team that has a dominate center, a powerful running back, or a power hitting and great defensive 3rd baseman. Those 3 positions always seem to be the key to any team that I like to follow.
