Gleason and Carney solo work - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Jackie Gleason and Art Carney were one of the greatest and most-beloved comedy teams of early tv. Situation comedy which capitalized on their
contrasting, disparate physical differences (Ed Norton: the "thin" man and
Ralph Kramden: the "fat" one). Although Gleason and Carney worked together as a successful comedy team for many years they went on to do solo work and were successful at it. And so the question is, from all the work that they did outside of the Hooneymooners what is your favorite from each actor.

My favorite:

Jackie Gleason "The Hustler" (1961)

Art Carney "Harry and Tonto" (1974)

Gleason played a very convincing Minnesota Fats in "The Hustler", but I'd say Gleason in "Gigot". I'll have to think about Carney. He was so versatile!

For Gleason I'd go with "Gigot", "The Hustler" and "Requiem For A Heavyweight" (in that order). For Carney, my picks would be "Harry And Tonto", "Going In Style" and "House Calls" (also in that order).

While Gleason's Minnesota Fats character in "The Hustler" is my favorite, here are a couple I like that haven't been mentioned yet:

The father in the Neil Simon film "Don't Drink the Water".

The sheriff in the first "Smokey and the Bandit" movie; "I'll get that sumbich..." I've wanted a diablo sandwich ever since seeing him wolf one down in that film.

The only film I remember seeing Art Carney in was "Harry and Tonto" and of course he was great in it.
