Oh well, they were on too late last night on my AMC station, so I just couldn't watch any of them!
Only THE BIG STREET was on at a somewhat reasonable time, but it didn't seem like my kind of movie. Maybe they'll do all the encores at the month's end. Here's hoping... |

I think you need to give THE BIG STREET a chance. It's widely considered to be Lucille Ball's best dramatic performance ever. Certainly it was her most challenging role. The character she played is about as far removed from Lucy Ricardo as you can get: mean, selfish, with a heart of stone. Lesser actresses would have been overly melodramatic performing that role, but Lucille Ball took on this difficult assignment with a totally honest and believable performance. Indeed, it was her performance in this RKO film that got MGM's attention. Soon after MGM offered her a contract, which finally certified her as a star. This film was also one of Lucille Ball's personal favorites. If you saw Carol Burnett's commentary, you would have heard her comment that this was the first Lucille Ball film she ever saw (she was a child when it was released) and it left a great impression. If it shows up again, I highly recommend that you give it a chance. |
