1980 Season is Hard to watch Because - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

hey everyone i been watching the Jeffersons and for some reason i cant get in2 the new George Jefferson always nice and stuff i dont remember last time he threw someone out the door and slammed door in someone face him and tom getting along just hard to watch.now

yeah he does just odd see him and wheezie switch rules but im glad he stil got his mean streak it wouldnt be same without it lol.

Watching the 80's episodes were hard to watch because it was not the same show the premiered in 1975. George and Louise were difficult to watch. I know over time characters on TV grow and change but those two were a bit too radical in their changes and it was too fast. Especially George and Tom being buddies. Sure they could had cut the racial comments but being best friends was another thing. Louise got too snobbish for her own good and those wigs were constantly changing she was wearing. A few of them were too obvious. Helen, on the other hand, I liked. She showed a wild side to her and at times hilarious. Too bad they did not keep Lionel and Jenny around. There could had been some good storylines with them. I thought Mike Evans and Berlinda Tolbert were quite compatible as a couple.

that what i was trying to say in my post i mean i watched Mission inpossibell part 1 through 3 stil George acted the same sneaky devil he alwyas was he was helping out Tom willis even went far to go to la without louies knowing was not the same stil the fat jokes stayed but those got old2.

and jenny appearing was ok but where was her baby girl who watching jessica the sitter not right in my book i missed Lionel mr Bentley when he returned he was barley even seen did u all notice that mean why come back if u barley going get tv time.

the jimmy charactor was funny the jeffersons fostor son i liked him but louies agreeing with george he could be a crook was not the wheezie we knew back then and it was defently something to get use 2.

I didn't like the last couple of seasons when they originally played on CBS but they are good TV viewing now in comparison to what is being produced now. The actors were the best part of it- they really knew how to bring those characters to life even when the writing was mediocre. Bentley is in only a handful of shows in year 10, but I counted him being in about 13 in the last season. I guess because of age all of them weren't quite as energetic as they were in the 70s, but they all had their moments- Isabel Sanford was quite energetic in State of Mind in the last season - even though she was 67 at the time. The show was still fun and if CBS hadn't moved it it could've ran another season or two although it is just as well that it ended when it did.
I would say strongly that the reason Amen and 227 were hits is that people tuned in to watch Sherman and Marla remembering them from the Jeffersons.

When Embassy began owning the show it was looking like an ordinary sitcom. The actors knew how to play those parts even though the show was on its last legs in the last three seasons. I cannot stand to watch seasons 10 and 11. The only episode I like in season 11 was Sayonara (1 & 2). It had Mike Evans back as Lionel and Berlinda Tolbert as Jenny (I could not stand that hairstyle she had on those episodes). It was sad that Lionel and Jenny had to be divorced. I like Mike Evans and Berlinda Tolbert as a couple. They were more convincing as a couple than Damon Evans (2nd Lionel) and Berlinda Tolbert. Those episodes especially with the Jefferson's and the Willis' fighting over which one was right and wrong between Lionel and Jenny's marriage. The comments that was made between them especially between Louise and Helen was hilarious and a scream. Especially when Louise said, "If the broom fits then fly it." Then Helen came back with, "Then showed me how." I was screaming out loud with laughter. It had a flavor of the first few seasons. I did not like the friendship of George and Tom. Too much of Laurel and Hardy and Abbott and Costello rolled into one. Marla Gibbs was not quite the same as Florence in those last two seasons.

I have been wondering just how accurate Neilsen ratings are. The Jeffersons was #3 for 1981-82, #12 for 82-83 and #19 for 83-84. In hindsight most of us feel the show was better in the 70s yet look how high the ratings were. Of course it can be said that those years were not good ones for sitcoms (matter of opinion) but there must've been something to the Jeffersons even when it wasn't in its prime that so many people watched it so consistently. I say it was the actors.

I think it was the Sunday Night Time slot that lead to the good ratings. It took CBS 5 years to realize that the best night to air the show was Sunday.

yeah i was shocked how louies acted when she lost the award to mis van moris in episode the donation mean she acted so childish it was sad.did she ever get that award later on in series

I dont know if she ever got that award, but one thing I do know, there was no way that I would have written an acceptance speech.. I know that you are suppose to be graceful and all that but I just could not do that.. I cant believe how she attacked Helen...I thought it was funny when Helen told her she was the only one that voted for her.. I couldnt believe though that Louise did not believe her after she told her she did vote in her favor... did she total forget her head for a moment? I guess she did

Until the end after Mrs Van Morris leaves George is quite tame in this episode. HE comes as rather passive which is strange to watch. As odd as it is that Louise would agree to write Mrs Van M's speech her statement "Sometimes the people who need help the most don't know that they need it" has stayed with me and I've seen how this is true in real life. Sometimes the little morals in these episodes transcend the quality (or lack thereof) of the episodes themselves.
Florence isn't in that scene. I guess they had it in her contract to have her heavily featured in some shows and lightly featured in others which was smart. She (and all the other supporting players) worked best in limited doses.

I think the reason why the 1980s seasons of The Jeffersons were hard to watch was because they were other popular 80s shows that stood the test of time then. Shows like Silver Spoons, Miami Vice, Cheers, Magnum, P.I, etc...were like the new 80s generation shows of the day. Jeffersons was like a yesterday show that became stale as the seasons went on.
