Default New Gary Sandy Interview

Hi Everyone,

I thought some of you might be interested in the new episode of my pop culture podcast "Just My Show" in which I interviewed Gary Sandy, who of course played Andy Travis on WKRP.

We talked all about the cast, "Turkeys Away," the city of Cincinnati, the music, "The New WKRP" and lots more.

Also, immediately following Gary's interview, composer/performer Jim Ellis stops by to tell the story behind his much talked about "WKRP" closing theme.

Here's the direct link:
http://www.justmyshow.com/showten.html

(You do not need an iPod to listen. You can listen on the audio player on the site, but may also download it as an MP3 if you prefer.)

Make sure to also look for some bonus clips from Gary at the bottom of the page.

Hope you enjoy it.

Enjoyed the interview very much.

But I have to say that in the bonus clip when Gary talks about being torn about it being released on DVD because the actors will not see any money, I was a little put off.

I know he wants the actors to get their due, and so do I, but you would think he would consider the fans and the preservation of the show! How can he talk about the show still being fresh and funny many years from now when it may disappear (in its orignal form)?

How else can we preserve the show? It's not going to be rerun forever- and the issues that exist with the reruns will always be there- the cut time, the changed music. Get it out complete on DVD and watch the appreciation and adulation of WKRP increase to where it finally gets its proper due.

It's nice that he has every episode in perfect complete original form, but what about the fans?

I think he came off badly in that segment, and I wonder if that is why it was kept separated from the main interview.

Glad you enjoyed it. As far as why the DVD question was kept separate...it really wasn't that deliberate. In order to keep listeners' attention, I generally try to keep each show to as close to 30 minutes as possible.

Gary was very generous with his time and had a lot of good things to say, so I took some of it out and saved it for bonus clips as I often do. I often struggle to decide what should stay in and what should come out, but in most cases it simply comes down to which parts I can take out without disrupting the flow of the rest of the interview.

You make some good points. It certainly would be great for the fans if the show came out on DVD in full and obviously you like to see the stars of a show focus on what's good for the fans that have supported them. And yes, money came up a few times during the interview.

I did, however, really appreciate how honest Gary was with his answers. I also think he has a fair point. At the time the deals were made, it would have been very hard to imagine that shows would be distributed like this. I understand that business doesn't work this way, but it would be nice to see people like Gary treated a little more fairly for the contributions they made. It's also important to note that any resentment he showed was directed towards the owners of the show. He seemed to me to be very appreciate of the whole "WKRP" experience.

Thanks for listening and for taking the time to comment.

I like Gary a lot and I do understand his point and that his resentment is directed at the owners.

I sympathize greatly with his postion, and I find it great that he has such a postive perspective on his experience in light of some of the negative apsects of how the show was treated.

I just hope Gary understands, that the music obstacle is so great that even a small dissention from a cast member does not help it's chances.

Do I think his endorsing and calling for a release could actually help?
Maybe.

If the whole remaining cast was publicly vocal about it, I think the general interest would be more prominent and people who hadnt even thought of WKRP in years might be like, "I want to see that show again, it was great."

I don't know if the rest of the cast is peeved about the royalties too, and I wouldn't blame them, it's just that it wont help the fans.

Releasing it on DVD and not releasing it on DVD- both scenarios end with no money for the cast.

Why wouldnt you want to see this show released for the fans the public in general?

Besides elating the old fans and gaining new ones, it can't hurt your career.
It can only help.

Default interview

I really enjoyed listening to the interview, I thought it was well prepared and presented my hat off for your efforts. After reading the previous posts I had came up with my own opinion before even listening to the seperated question. But after hearing his reasoning I can definitely see his point and understand his thinking. Although I would really like to see the DVD release.

Thanks for the interview. Gary Sandy seems like a cool guy - I actually saw him on stage in 2002 (Best Little Whorehouse in TX). Keep those interviews coming...see if you can get Gregory Sierra!!
