You've got to wonder if Delta's firing factored into her decision. It's hard to imagine if everything was working well on this classic show that she would have left. Just a guess , but I think she smelled what direction the show was going and decided to go when the going was good. That's not to say that there weren't some other factors involved.

She was smart to leave when she did, the show tanked after Delta left.
It's amazing that producers would dare fool around with the cast of a hit show. That magic that DW has is so rare, you don't DARE tamper with it unless you want the same result that happened to DW after Burke and Smart left

Jean was supposed to be a recurring character in the Julia Duffy season, but she changed her mind last minute and asked to be let go. Jean also supported Delta during the mess. By Delta's last season, the fighting had gotten so bad that people were forced to choose sides.
