These old schooler's are still kicking butt, and taking names.

The 40th annual Country Music Association Awards Monday night were a Brooks & Dunn extravaganza. They hosted the show, the first telecast on ABC and a return to Nashville after the 2005 edition aired from New York. Their performance of Building Bridges, with Vince Gill and Sheryl Crow, opened the festivities.

And they won the most awards, taking single, song and video of the year and winning top duo for the 14th time in 15 years.

They didn't win the big prize, entertainer of the year, though; it went to Kenny Chesney, who also won it two years ago.

Last year's top entertainer, Keith Urban, did win his third consecutive male-vocalist award, but the singer, who is in rehab, was not able to accept it in person. He had Ronnie Dunn read a letter that said, "I'm pained not being here with you all tonight. ... I'm looking forward to coming home and seeing you all soon."

Brad Paisley's Time Well Wasted beat Brooks & Dunn (and Chesney, Rascal Flatts and Urban) for album of the year, while his duet with Dolly Parton, When I Get Where I'm Going, won vocal event of the year.

2005's American Idol, Carrie Underwood, got her first two nominations and collected trophies on both: the Horizon Award, for breakthrough artist, and, more surprisingly, female vocalist.

Fellow nominee Faith Hill certainly seemed surprised, exclaiming "What?" on camera as Underwood was announced as the winner. Sandra Westerman of Borman Entertainment, Hill's management company, stated, "She was joking when they read her name. ... She didn't realize she was on camera."

Rascal Flatts won its fourth consecutive top-group award.

The show, like the Grammys of late, stressed live performance over awards and chatter. Among the memorable moments:

•Underwood growled her way through the vandalistic vengeance chart-topper Before He Cheats. Later, Miranda Lambert slammed a guitar to the floor during the similarly themed Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.

•Sara Evans powered through Real Fine Place to Start.

•Sugarland rocked up a rousing version of the new Settlin'.

•Hill sang Stealin' Kisses, bringing its composer, Lori McKenna, onstage to sing backup.

•Alan Jackson sang Like Red on a Rose with understated grace.

•Little Big Town showed off finely honed harmonies on Bones.

•George Strait performed Give It Away and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, with '50s/'60s star Sonny
