This is the second time now that ABC Family cancelled Valerie / Valerie's Family / The Hogan Family from their schedule. They did it back in April 2006, which it only lasted for 1 week. Then, they just did it back in October 2006, which only lasted for 5 weeks. Who knows when or if ABC Family will bring back Valerie / Valerie's Family / The Hogan Family on their schedule. I think we all should contact Warner Brothers and Gord and David at tvshowsondvd.com and tell them that we would like to have Valerie / Valerie's Family / The Hogan Family released on DVD in season sets. Tell them that ABC Family keeps cancelling it off their network and that we would like to have the season sets released uncut on DVD. I think it's worth a try.

As much as I would LOVE for The Hogan Family to be on DVD, I don't exactly see that happening. I mean, all Warner has to do is see the show has been pulled from TV twice within the past few months because of low ratings.

I would love uncut episodes, but still it would be at least 2 years by the time we got to Season 4 on DVD.

It sorta angers me that ABC Family is showing Full House and Boy Meets World on their station while a couple seasons of both shows are available on DVD. But, I do understand that the ratings are what counts.

Not necessarily. The Facts of Life was culled early from low ratings, and we've just seen a Season 3 release. The same with Family Ties; it was culled from either Nick-at-Nite or TV Land due to dismal ratings and still Season 1 is due out February 20, 2007:

I'm not saying it helps matters by having the show cancelled TWICE, but it certainly doesn't necessarily seal its fate in regards to a DVD release. I think its low profile in re-runs (and DVD demand) simply results in it being a sub-standard show when compared to other shows at the time which were more memorable and innovative.

I am a HUGE fan of this show, especially of the Valerie era, but I have to admit that it lost a spark when the switchover happened and the stories became more stretched and silly. Sandy Duncan is a brilliant actress who deserved better material, but the writing was downright pedestrian and was a re-hash of other shows like Family Matters, Perfect Strangers and Step By Step. These shows have their fans but the fanbase isn't big enough. A small fanbase doesn't mean potential customers who would buy a DVD release if one happened. When you have "surefire" hits and landmark shows like Happy Days failing to make a splash in the DVD market, the studios get skeptical about other shows like The Hogan Family whose popularity was modest at best even at its peak. Not every fan of a show will buy a DVD set and if the fanbase is small to begin with, the prospects of a DVD release are bleak to say the least.

I think the first couple of seasons have a shot of being released simply because of Valerie Harper. Her fanbase from The Mary Tyler Moore Show would probably be enticed to check this show out, but even that is put into question when one sees that The Mary Tyler Moore Show almost didn't have a Season 2 release due to poor sales of Season 1. It turns out FOX took another chance with the show and realized that Season 1 was too expensive for the casual fan of the show to buy (the average price for Season 1 was about $40-$45). Still, The Mary Tyler Moore Show is a landmark show and a legend, and if that isn't a surefire guarantee of seeing high sales on DVD, then modest-rated shows like The Hogan Family are going to need a lot more help and convincing from fans to even be considered. The Mary Tyler Moore Show Season 2 did well only because the average price for the set went down to $20-$25, a much more affordable price for the casual fan.

How much should The Hogan Family go for? $5? I as a die-hard fan would pay $50 for it (as would some of you), but I'm not in the majority, sad to say. Even if every fan on this message board bought a DVD set, that wouldn't be enough for Warner Brothers to have made a profit. Studios don't want to lose money and they don't want to break out even. They want to make profits. They need to be business savvy or they'll lose their jobs. They can't simply release it for art's sake or otherwise every show would be released. As evil or as heartless as that sounds, you can't blame them.

I'm not trying to dissuade anyone from hoping or from trying to get the show released. I'm with you in that I want Season sets of this show, but I'm just being realistic. What we should do is try to put our heads together and come up with a way to generate more interest in the show. Myself, I'm in the process of updating my page for the show and will include a campaign section for the show to be released on DVD. But that won't be enough. We need more ideas if we're to succeed.

I just hope they release Seasons 1 & 2...that would be cool since they already released Bateman's own show, Arrested Development.
