HOLLYWOOD - Talk-show host Bill Maher has sparked outrage after appearing at numerous Halloween parties over the weekend dressed as Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin, complete with a bloody stingray barb attached to a khaki shirt.
The outfit is among the top Halloween costumes in the U.S. this year and while some have found it amusing, others insist it is an insult to the late conservationist who died in September. Photos of the celebrity comedian making the rounds at Halloween parties in Los Angeles over the weekend have been widely circulated on the Internet. Maher hosts weekly HBO talk show Real Time with Bill Maher and has angered some of his fans. One fan wrote on the star's official Web site, "I suppose he thought it was funny, but it was seriously lacking taste, decorum and respect for Steve's family." Another fan wrote, "I am kind of torn on it--I have a good sense of humor but this one is just kind of tacky." |

What is it lately with people wanting to make fun of Steve Irwin? I don't get it. It's not funny. It's lacking taste, class and respect.

Bill Maher has always been controversial. This is the same guy who called the 9/11 terrorists "Heroic." |

I will say this
its just as offensive to me when Maher does it as when it is done on south park i judge the PERSON and the ACT, i dont just take sides based on political affiliation wrong is wrong and right is right, no matter who does it |

I like Bill Maher. Like I said in the South Park thread, I don't agree with his costume decision, but I'll defend his right to dress however he wants.

So you disagree with Maher but you find nothing wrong with what south park did?? How this not be on the same level. You say you like dark humor. Both look pretty dark. |

"The reason I'm not offended is because it really has no bearing one way or the other over what happened. Dark humor is also a means some people use to get through their grief over a tragedy like what happened to Steve Irwin."
Then.... "For the record, I didn't think the bit was cool. I felt uncomfortable with it watching the episode (and I've been a fan of the show since 1997), but I still defend Trey and Matt's right to do it." So you can see how one would be confused on where you stand on this issue. |

There's a difference between being offended by and being uncomfortable with the bit. I wasn't offended, meaning that it didn't anger me or put me off on the show. I don't resent them for doing it, and it didn't hinder my enjoyment of the rest of the episode (or the series). I was, however, a bit uncomfortable with it. I didn't think it was the coolest thing for them to be doing, but it didn't seem like a big deal to me.
I feel the same way about Bill Maher's costume. |

Try not to get too upset about it, everyone. Just remember that Steve is now having the time of his life in a great place, and that the people who are making fun of him are stuck on Earth and are severely restricted with what they can do. Steve can do anything he wants to now, whereas those who are making fun of him are still having to conform to the rules of the physical world. Steve doesn't have rules any more.

I know it's difficult, but I think those of us that don't like what they're doing should try to be level-headed and mature about it and not pay them any attention. |
