Something very inconsistent starting at season 1! - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I think season1 was the best season that captured just how poor the Evans family was. With that said, I noticed something in season 1 that was very inconsistent with their poverty. In the episode where the man from the Housing Authority comes to visit, JJ brags to Thelma how he has tickets to a Marvin Gaye concert.

I know things were cheaper in the early 70's, but where the heck did JJ (who didn't have a job) get money for concert tickets?!? The rest of the season showed how James worked his ass off for what little money the family had and here is JJ with a luxury item. I think it was a big mishap from the writers.

Don't forget that J.J took Henrietta out on the town with ONE DOLLAR so he found ways to get things down-lol

True, but it would have been better if they explained it. Have Thelma ask, "Where did you get those tickets?" It would have made more sense. Instead, you have JJ with concert tickets, and meanwhile, James is working two jobs and still can't afford meat for dinner.

Bad writing again. They could have said that J.J. painted a portrait and the person paid him with the two tickets. It sure doesn't make sense to have a family struggling so badly and here is the dopey son, with no job or money and he can go to a concert? Especially a Marvin Gaye concert??? Are you kidding me???
