Can someone help with info on Michael's statement?

In "The Investigation", Michael says about spying and bugging phones, "How did the CIA get into Italy". I have no idea what he was refering to. Can someone do some research?

SISMI has long been notorious for far-right leanings.

Senior SISMI officers were implicated with celebrated swindler Roberto Calvi, the notorious P2 masonic lodge, and other extreme rightist groups. SISMI works hand in glove with U.S., British and other intelligence agencies.

In the 1960s and '70s, it was revealed that SISMI carried out numerous operations for the CIA, including bugging the Vatican, the Italian president's palace, and foreign embassies.

Some of its officers have been accused in the past of perjury, blackmail and political interference.

Italy's civilian intelligence service, SISDE, associated with Italy's political centre-left, has long been a bitter rival of SISMI.

OK Brie, thanks. I guess I was looking at Michael's question all wrong when he said "How did the CIA get into Italy?" Thelma said "How would someone get in here to bug our phone?" Then michael said his line. I guess it was like sarcastic cause no knew how they got in to bug them, that's the secret. OK, I guess.

I am thinking Michael is asking how was it POSSIBLE at all. Back then, we lived in a society where we were given the impression that all was sacred, safe, very hard to access, as far as European countries, especially the Vatican. We know NOW that it is possible. All it takes is ONE PERSON on the inside (whether it's a building or a country) to make it possible. It seems you are asking the exact details as to how they succeeded in doing this. I was unable to find anything that actually states in detail how the bugging was actually done, who were the key players, how they tapped the Vatican, etc.

Michael's character even saying this was dumb. How many people even cared abt such a statement coming out of the mouth of a child?

By that time Michael was a teen, and I guess you would have had to have been an adult in those times.

I can only go by what I've learned and remember from High School and College.

It is also one of those statements that if you didn't grow up in the 70's or didn't know abt this piece of history, you will surely be lost wondering what Michael meant by that. It goes right up there with people who may not know or heard of Medgar Evers, Leon Spinks, etc. For me, hearing Marvin Gaye's name mentioned on GT's reminds me that he is no longer here with us. Leon Spinks, I know him because I seen the fights...people who weren't around then or are not boxing fans wouldn't know what J.J. was talking abt.

To be honest with you, I never knew what Florida was referencing when she mentioned the school bus being turned over the first time this episode aired. I had to ask my brother what she meant. I then learned abt it in high school, after that episode first aired.

I was watching this segment on television and they were talking about how stupid the children in America was, and they were asking simple questions and the kids knew nothing.

So I can see why some people lack knowledge when it come to thing of that nature.

So true. The 70's seem like the last times when people really got into all that history, speaking out, marching, protesting, etc. It's a sad state of affairs when the only time all of America gets their history lessons from a sitcom from the 70's or a Spike Lee movie.
