There's other ways, but you need to think about them...lol, I won't give you all the answers. Just think about our culture as opposed to others and it shouldn't be too hard. **Gracie** |

*clears throat* I will now post my essay...might be a lil helpful......
Is freedom really free? Well, Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary defines freedom as a political right; liberation; independence. Does that definition apply to our country? Lets start with the constitution. The constitution gives us 5 basic freedoms. Those freedoms are speech, religion, press, assembly, and petition. If a person strongly expresses their opinion in a newspaper, they are guaranteed the freedoms of press and speech, yet they get punished for voicing their opinion. A group of students gather to petition against something they believe strongly in. The protest, however, gets out of hand and people are arrested. Yet again, freedoms listed in the first amendment are denied. When freedom is mentioned, one of the first things to come to mind is money. Americans are free to have jobs and earn a salary to support themselves and their families. If this is true, then why do we pay taxes? That almost defeats the purpose of having a job. You work very hard to earn money for your family, and when April 15th comes around, you end up giving a large amount back to the government. After the civil war, Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery and gave slaves freedom. Even after that, there were still many slaves in the south. Also, African-Americans still did not have the same rights and freedoms as white people. Black students could not attend all-white schools until 1954, when all schools were desegregated. In 1955, black people were not given the freedom to sit in the front of the bus. The 15th Amendment finally gave black men the right to vote, but that was almost 5 years after the end of the Civil War. Women also have had difficulties with freedom. In the past, women’s only jobs were to cook, clean, and take care of the children. Women did not have jobs. They couldn’t vote or make any big decisions. Later, in the 1900’s, women could have jobs, but they were being discriminated, even if they were fully qualified for the position. That is not considered freedom. Then, in the 1960’s, women were finally considered equal. They were finally free, or so they thought. Today, women aren’t treated with the same equality as men. The indications are more subtle now, but women are still treated slightly unfairly. Sure, people like to say that Americans are free, but are we? We have 5 freedoms in the First Amendment, but those are only active to a certain extent. We are able to have jobs, only if we give the government part of our hard earned money. African-Americans were given freedom after the civil war, but they weren’t completely free right away. As much as women have fought for freedom, they aren’t entirely free. So, back to the question, is freedom really free? In my opinion, I don’t think freedom means 100% free all the time, but it is free on some level. We in America have more so-called “freedom” than some other countries in the world, so we should all be thankful that we have the amount of freedom that we have.
