As a lot of you know, back in July my little cousin was killed in a fire started purposely by a neighbor. It has been on my mind constantly ever since. I had to let some of the emotions out, so I wrote a poem about what happened. I'm kind of apprehensive to read it to my family, not knowing what they'll think, so, could you guys give me some feedback on this? I would really appreciate it!
(Sorry that it's so long!)"In Loving Memory" One warm July night seemed like any other She was shooting fireworks with her sisters and brothers After the fun, they called it a night Everything, so they thought, was perfectly fine Outside there was an angry man Determined for revenge on our family with his plan So he lit a rocket and aimed it at the home Then, like a coward, he ran away, a coward to this day Everyone seen it, everyone knows, so they pick up the telephone Neighbors rush over telling the news To the little kids who had no clue The kids woke up everyone and got them out "We're all okay," they thought without doubt But, they forgot about one little girl One young life alone in the evils of this world Once they realized, it was too late The fire had determined the little girls fate I can't imagine what went though her head As she stumbled out of that bed She crawled through that firey maze Only for herself to be set ablaze I bet she cried, cried for help I can't imagine how she felt There she was, found in the hall A young girls body so fragile and small The paramedics tried as hard as they could They couldn't get her to breathe like they thought they would She was flown to Children's Mercy They thought they could save her, see? But, it didn't work, and there lie a young corpse Body burnt from head to toe, could still recognize her though There was shock and dismay as the news spread We couldn't believe it, Jewell was dead All eyes focused towards one man Karl Bowlin, who started it and ran He claims he didn't do it But the neighbors saw, he was guilty, and they knew it He was then taken to jail I hope for him his life is now Hell In a small casket lie an eight year old "The burns are too graphic to see," we were told There it was, our final goodbye And we couldn't even see her one last time At the service there was a shape in the clouds The form of an angel, Jewell looking down One little body beneath the ground Has turned our world way around How could someone be that heartless and wreckless? Never gave her another thought or chance Jewell's life was cut way too short There he is, standing in court Probably thinking "I didn't mean to hurt her," But what he did was first degree murder Capital punishment is what he needs 'Cause that night he set out for our family I hope his guilt haunts him daily Nothing, we know, can bring her back But we're not gonna let him sit back and relax I know the story hasn't even begun to start, But Jewell will always have a special place in our hearts And so this poem for Jewell from me Will keep her in loving memory |

That is such a beautiful poem. It brought tears to my eyes. I'll never understand how anyone could hurt an innocent child.
I don't remember you ever posting about your young cousin here, but she is in my prayers. Take comfort in knowing that she is in a wonderful place where no one can harm her again. I hope the bastard who murdered her burns and rots in Hell forever for what he did. |

Wow, you got me crying. That poem is amazing and powerful, and I can tell it comes from the heart.
I hope justice serves it's purpose and makes that man, the neighbor, suffer. I hope he rots for eternity. |

It's a beautiful poem Amber. It really tugs at the heart strings. I hope the guy who did this gets justice.

I'm SO sorry about your little cousin. I can't even imagine what your family is feeling, the loss of a child is unjust and inexplicable, especially in such horrifying circumstances. Your poem is beautiful. I hope that bastard gets the book thrown at him. My prayers are with your family.

As for it being an accident, how do you "accidentally" hit a house? You have a whole sky to shoot at. I'm sorry, but I don't buy it for a minute. Ambear, I'm sorry to hijack your thread. I don't want it to seem that I'm being insensitive by replying to her post and playing devil's advocate on such a serious subject as your cousin's death, but I just felt that something had to be said. |

A very beautiful poem. Though very sad.
And I am very sorry to hear about your cousin. What a terrible tragedy.

I am another one of Karl's neices and on behalf of our family and his it is only premeditated murder if you are planning to kill the person and he did not intentionaly kill her. when you are drunk as he was so frequently you can not always tell what it is you are doing and not always, do you realize what can happen as a result. No one is saying that he is completely innocent but everyone does need to understand that if you were the one being blamed you would want people to hear you out and not just one side of the story. Karl was a jokester he did not always see that his jokes were offensive but he would make mean comments even to his family. I am not trying to offend the family but I do know that he was not intenionally mean to people but was a mean drunk. I don't believe that he did this on purpose. Fire crackers fly in all directions even when you are sober and pointing them at the sky. My cousin once lit a chair on fire with a simple firework. It can happen and does. Sometimes people's mistakes are just mistakes not acts of purpose. Karl was a Nice Person when he was not drunk. By the way he was charged with 2nd degree murder and a count of arson and it says 2nd degree unintinional murder. They don't believe that he did it on purpose.

I haven't been on here in a while, I want to thank everyone for your responses... I read it to my family and they started crying, they really liked it...
![]() ☼amywhisenant☼ ~ I never said that he did it on purpose. My family was friends with him also, and I have met him a couple times and that's what they all said to-- He must have been drunk. But... He had been arguing with my aunt, and at least five kids were in the house and even if he didn't do it on purpose, he just went home... I'm sorry, I just don't see how anyone could do that... And I know he was charged with 2nd degree murder but to me, in my opinion, he knew people were inside and he still went home, that's why I said "it's what he needs"... Just my opinion... Please don't take it offensively! Kay Scarpetta ~ It's okay, I know you're just voicing your opinion like I am now!
