TV Land: Will they add another network? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

As TV Land starts airing more stuff from the 80's and 90's and dropping more shows from the 60's and 70's, does anyone here think it would be a good idea for TV Land to branch out and add another channel? It seems like they should come out with a TV Land Classics channel now with all the 80's and 90's content currently airing on TV Land.Just think.This could open up time slots on the new channel to air shows like Dennis The Menace,Mayberry RFD,Hazel,Bewitched,I Dream of Jeannie,Petticoat Junction,The Honeymooners,Father Knows Best,etc etc.Does anyone here think it would be a good idea for a branch out classics channel for TV Land?

That's an excellent idea - I really don't care much for all their "TVLand Original" shows they are coming out with these days and they sure play some series to death, over and over and over ......

Another network with stuff from the 50's, and 60's would be a great idea - and add some variety.

In this day and age of marketing to the youngsters,I think it would be nice for TV Land to remember that there are many many millions of us people over the age of 40 who grew up watching at the time or watching reruns of classic shows form the 50's and 60's.Most of us don't care for alot of the crap coming from the TV the last 30 years.I haven't watched current TV shows on a regular basis for probably 20 years because I'm tired of the selfishness and mean spiritedness of the shows.There is a huge market out there forTV Land if they would do this right.Quite frankly because of my age and era I grew up in,I don't consider TV land shows like A Team or Murphy Brown and others as classic TV.

These cable stations need to keep in mind that not everyone is under 30. There are more people 40 and over and we are a very large demographic. We also buy products from their sponsers. That would be awesome if Tvland would branch out and start another channel so that the older shows would see the light of day. I really miss them. Does anyone know how to get in touch with tvland? Let's start an email or letter writing campaign and let them know how we feel.

It has nothing to do with the size of the audience but just the ages. It doesn't matter how many of us there are over 40 that would watch. The advertisers don't want us. We aren't easily bamboozled into buying something like kids are. We aren't sheep who need to buy a product because everyone else is buying it. You need to know how marketing and advertising work. They want to have an effect on the audience and the older people get the less likely they are to be influenced by their bull****. But yes, I would love to see a network like Turner Classic Movies, moreso than like TV Land with all of their cutting. Turner Classic Television, uncut, commercial free and nothing later than 1975. That would be perfect but it ain't gonna happen.

Sadly you are right.

My brother is a disc jockey at a radio station in Virginia and he was telling me that many, many cities are losing their oldies stations for that same reason. Advertisers would much rather cater to that 24 year old who is living with boy/girl friend, loaded with credit card debt and other debts, do not own their own home and many have to work two jobs to make ends meet than that 54 year old who has been married for decades and actually has money to spend. Part of that I have been told is that many 20 somethings tend to spend money of stuff without thinking while the older generation takes their time and actually thinks what they want to buy.

So as a result a lot of the media is more/less geared towards those under 30 now. Look at how poker is so hot right now. I myself remember a time when poker was considered well "..for old people". But the 20 somethings discovered it and presto, now poker games are seen on national TV.

I myself would love to see a TV-Land 50's/60s channel but I doubt that will happen. Chances are they have a ton of consultants telling them that well "..the 18-30 years old won't want anything in black & white".

That is so true and very sad.
Actually it's very scary how big business along with their advertisements manipulates the minds of todays youth.It seems moreso than it was when I was younger.Scary.

If I remember correctly, TVLand actually started out as Nickelodeon's "oldies" channel when they began to phase out older shows on Nick at Night to bring more kid and teeny bopper programming. Now TVLand is doing the same thing, phasing out the older shows. Why can't there be a pure old TV channel? Heck, they have cooking channels, golf channel, home decorating channels, hunting and fishing channels, etc. None of those are advertising to appeal to kids. Judging by the interest in Sitcoms Online, there are a lot of people who want the old shows.

Lady, what are you talking about? Not many 20 somethings are clueless when it comes to finance! I'm 25, got my own house, car is paid for, i'm married, plus i'm a real estate agent. Your horrible stereotype of twenty somethings is crazy. If I said all people over 40 wear depends, can't drive, walk too slow etc. then there would have been a problem. Please, stop with that mess!

The other interesting thing is that when TV Land first started out (Fall, 1996?) they showed their programs UNCUT! The only commercials were the old classic commercials called "Infomercials." In the fall of 1997, they started edited the shows, having more commercials, and it has been that way since.

I know quite a few folks in their 30s, 40s and older who can't handle their money, so it is hardly a problem just for those under 30.

However I have read elsewhere the statement about how advertisers want to grab those in their 20s, not those in their 40s. When Infinity Communications last year dropped their oldies station in Baltimore in favor of one of those "Jack" stations, they brought up this "we can't sell to fifty year olds" crap. The funny thing about that was is that "Jack" is doing about 40% less business than what the oldies station did.

I would love to see how Viacom, Infinity, Clear Channel, NBC and so forth do their "studies" when it comes to their viewers and listeners. Not every 23 year old is into smoking Marlboro Lights, listening to modern rock, poker games and watching Dog the bounty hunter nor is every 57 year old ready for the old folks home.

It's not gonna change. Take American Life (formerly Good Life) for example. They cater to baby boomers with classic shows from the 50s and 60s, the types of shows that TV Land wants no part of like all of the Warner detective series. And they can't get on many cable systems, even with digital cable and 500 channel systems. In NY, we lost our oldies station, flawed as it might have been, to Jack. And this was a station that was always in the Top 10 for the city ratings. All Jack is is an oldies station with 80s and 90s songs instead of 50s and 60s music. I didn't care to hear 80s and 90s music when it was the 80s and 90s, why would I want to hear it now?

Let's face it, DVD is the last and only hope for many of these older shows. Unless it's a series that has never been off the air, like a Gilligan or Lucy, the show has no chance of being seen. CBN is no longer around nor is there anything else like it. TV Land was great for a couple of years when no one got it. HA! was excellent but only lasted for a very short time. All of the great independent stations disappeared when Fox and these other crappy "networks" appeared. There really is no longer an outlet or desire for older shows, save for a few evergreens. Even something like The Fugitive, maybe the best drama of all time, doesn't really run anymore.
