Trends, fads, and the fall from grace - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I got this idea from seeing Vanilla Ice on MTV. Let's talk about stuff that was popular for awhile, but then it was just another fad. Let me see some fads that I can think of that involves music.

Ricky Martin- He had one good song that made him well know. "Livin' La Vida Loca" brought him fame, but in a way I know he won't be able to top Livin La Vida Loca.

MC Hammer- I was in about 1st grade when his song "U Can't Touch This" topped the charts. I don't remember if he had another hit after that. I know he is a preacher now.

Vanilla Ice- Ice Ice Baby is another song that was going on during the early 90's. I think his career dropped soon after.

The Spice Girls- I think what made them become another fad was because they were on everything. When you see them on a bag of chips, then you know they are everywhere...

New Kids on the Block- This one is bringing back memories for me. I remember school picture day in 1st grade I wore a NKOTB shirt. I think what made them become a fad was the shortening of the name. They were know longer New Kids on the Block, but NKOTB. I heard they were doing a reunion concert, so maybe they will have another cd out soon.

In this post you can talk about anything- music, movies, toys, or whatever.

If I recall, the New Kids' career was longer than any of the other musicians you mentioned, so I am not sure if they would fall under the "fad" category. The shortening of the name to NKOTB didn't occur until they tried to make a comback sometime in the '90s. That stage was certainly a fad, I'd say, but I don't know if you could say the first part of their career was a fad.

But then I suppose it depends on one's definition of a fad. I think other factors besides longevity are involved, especially when we talk about the music business, because if a relatively short career were the only criteria, then like 80% of music is a fad.

Anyhoo, a few I can think of are Tickle Me Elmo and all his Tickle Me friends (Cookie Monster, I think there was an Ernie and maybe Big Bird) and Beanie Babies.

Hmmm....and how about fashion? Anybody remember "tight-rolling" your jeans?

I'm sure I'll think of more later. (BTW, this is a good topic! Should be lots of fun!)

Actually it's an icon meant to be used with AOL instant messenger. I got it at www.badassbuddy.com They have lots of really great ones there, but I'm warning you now, some of them are vulgar and may be offensive to some people, so don't say I didn't warn you!

Ooh! Ooh! Virtual pets! Like, Tamagachis and Giga Pets. Those were HUGE at my school. But they faded out. Same with Yo-Yos. Both were about 4 or 5 years ago. And, like Bootsy mentioned, Beanie Babies.

As for music, LFO comes to mind. "Summer Girls" was pretty big, but after that they just faded out. They have a new album out, which I haven't heard and don't care to, but I haven't heard anyone talking about it.

Fashion-wise.. Well, I'm not sure if this really qualifies, but when I was little my sister and all her friends wore two pairs of socks. Like, on the left foot there would be a blue sock then a green sock, and on the right foot there would be a green sock then a blue sock.

And I'm probably going no where with this, but when I was in the sixth grade, EVERYBODY had those DocuMent Folders or whatever that are plastic and have about 10 pockets in them and you use elastic bands to keep them closed..

Maybe these were all just at my school, but they could've been other places as well.

I don't think this really qualifies as a fad or not..but has anyone seen the new Popples? Remember the Popples? They're these creatures that can turn into balls and there was a cartoon about them? And they had stuffed animals, but back in the day they were all monochromatic, even if they were hot pink. But the new Popples....oooh the new Popples are scary tripped out psychedelic colors.

Anyway, that doesn't has much to do with anything necessarily, but talking about toys made me think of it.

One of the oddest clothing fads was guy's sportscoats with the arms shoved up to the elbow. You can still see that in the old sitcoms. Sam had one on the other night on Cheers.

One trend I'd like to see go is the backward baseball cap. I didn't expect it to hold on so long. I remember doing that only to accentuate the point if I wanted to look goofy. It's kind of a Goober thing.

Jimmy Swagart fell from grace about as comically as any script writer could have possibly come up with.
Michael Jackson might be back, but from the height he was once elevated to he has fallen from that grace for certain.

I was watching MTV the other day. A young woman was making an imitation Madona video. She did a good job. But She said, "That's so cool," a lot, a lot, a lot. At first it was just the word "cool" that made a come back. Only it was pronounced more like, "Kul". Then the variations and moderations and now, well, It's trendy... Cool!

I still have my Popples. I have a small one that is a lime green, and a larger one that is a light purple.
I didn't know they had come out with them again. Hmmm...I'd like to see what they look like nowadays.

I just caught a TV commercial for them the other day. Watch like FOX or Cartoon Network in the after-school hours and I'm sure you'll catch them.

I just don't get why they are making a comeback. They aren't making a new cartoon as far as I know of, so little kids nowadays aren't even gonna know what Popples are.

My theory as to why they are scary tripped out psychedlic colors now is that they know that the only people who will know what Popples are are like college aged, and have quite possibly experimented with drugs, lol. Plus, ya know, retro stuff is sort of in with the college crowd, and I just know there are some stoners in the dorms watching Cartoon Network thinking that they have to go buy a Popple, lol!

I just now caught the commercial. They really are psychedlic colors. They look like somebody was tripping when they designed 'em. lol. I totally agree with you that the kids aren't really going to have a good understanding of what they are.
