Default The I Hate Kelly Thread

am i the only one that really hates Kelly? she is so self-absorbed and likes telling everyone what to do... she always talks down to donna and makes Brenda look like the witch when she was a man-stealing witch... and she was never nice to Val, from the moment the poor girl set foot in Beverly Hills.

She didn't like Val from the beginning because she knew what a bitch she was going to be. Some people have that intuition. I have had my intuition work very well for me regarding certain females. No one else could "smell" it, but I could. And I was always right. It is usually the males who can't smell it. Kelly got on my nerves at times, but she had her reasons for hating Val. And we all know Val was just asking for it.

^ I used to love her bitch fights with Val. So classic.....Anyway, I always liked Kelly, except for when she snuck around with Dylan, when Brenda went to France. Oh, and her fued with Valerie- Only cause Val's my favorite character.

i hate kelly... she started out in high school as a cheap tramp who slept with all the guys and then stole Brenda's boyfriend, then in college she treated Val like crap, for no reason, Val NEVER did anything to her... and she always talked to Donna like she was an idiot, once even yelling at her for going out with DeShawn Hardell...

factsoflife, can I be vice president of the I Hate Kelly club? She was cool when she was just the bitchy secondary character but when they pushed her to lead after Brenda left, the girl became an haughty, sanctimonious, self-rigetous, hypocritical little snot. And the Kelly/Dylan relationship was one of the worse. Didn't have to natural chemistry Brenda/Dylan did and all they did was bicker and make each other miserable. Yup, couldn't stand her and I always wanted Val to just cut that bitch LOL.

Very well said, and totally correct. i'll never forget one time when Kelly YELLED AT DONNA and called her a rhymes with blut because donna wanted to date Dashawn Hardell... i was like, Kelly you are not her mother. and i hated that she STOLE BRENDA'S BOYFRIEND and then everyone called BRENDA the rhymes with witch word.

What I didn't like was the direction the writers went with the character. I thought Kelly was far more interesting in the first couple of seasons than she was as time progressed. In the beginning she was very much the snobby/spoiled quintessential Beverly Hills teen, which I thought was great, as it made the character more interesting and believable. I mean, it was a show about growing up in BH, after all. I expect at least one of the characters to embody a few snobby/spoiled qualities. Not that you have to grow up in BH to have those qualities, but I digress.

After Shannen Doherty left, it seemed the writers transformed the Kelly character from the things I mentioned above into someone who was judgmental and self-righteous. My guess is that the writers did that because she had to become the heroine after Doherty left, and they didn't want the lead female to embody the BH stereotype. Maybe it's just me, but I think it would have been far more interesting watching her progress from a spoiled teen to struggling with adulthood. But we really didn't get that, IMO.

Kelly was one of the most developed characters from the whole entire series...She was snobby in high school, but there was always another side to her nice as well. She wasn't just a plain bitch, which made the character more interesting.

Kelly needed to grow up, and change. It was believable when it happened, because she didn't just become nice overnight. We watched her grow up.

I don't think it was so much that they wanted their female lead to be extra nice, and lose that certain Beverly Hills sterotype, but if you think about it, Valerie came in soon after Brenda left. Valerie was THE bitch of the show, so they had to soften Kelly up a bit. And those 2 bumped heads a lot of the time, so that also made it seem like Kelly was the nice girl next door.

I respectfully disagree, because the character's transition did feel a bit contrived to me. I love it when writers allow a character to develop and change, it just felt as though the transition wasn't done very well, IMO.

As for the "bitch" part, I am not talking about a one-dimensional kind of person, I was thinking more along the lines of classic BH kid, which is partly why the audience was pulled in to begin with, we wanted to see BH teens and their lives.

You're right, there were other sides to her character and that's exactly what I'm talking about, not the cliched soapy bitch-type. I guess I wanted at least one character to inhabit more of a detached/apathetic, Bret Easton Ellis kind of vibe. This kind of bitch can actually be pretty provocative in terms of character development, and I was wishing the writers had went that way with her. The kind of bitch Val was, is completely different than the bitch character I saw possibilities for in Kellie. Val's more vampy soap, whereas high school Kelly bitch could have had real promise in terms of writing and character development that allowed her to grow up.

You're right, the writers did allow her to grow up and change from being a snobby high school and that part is great! I'm just saying there is a way to let her retain some of her high school self in a way that's thought-provoking and yet retains a peculair, distinctive BH air about it. I wanted see her change, but I did think she became a bit sanctimonious.

I couldn't agree more with your points about Valerie! I have a couple of thoughts about that character too, but I'll save it for another thread.
