Post What book are you reading now?

Well? What is it? Is it good? What is it about?

Kittflynn, I wanted to ask you, what was "Patchwork Planet" about? I thought I'd make this new post instead of having us talk about it over on the NMK thread.

Well, currently, I am in the middle of a 3 book Star Trek Voyager series called Dark Matters. It's only OK, but if I've read 1.5 books, I figure I'll finish the other half. However, I haven't gotten a chance to read it in like 1.5 months, since I always have so much homework and reading for my classes

Next, I'll probably read a Dave Barry book, I have a few laying around. I love Dave Barry.

The last "fun" book I read was a history of the St. Louis Cardinals. The really neat part of this book was that the author put together past interviews to tell the story. Then I went back to college and since then have read hundreds of pages a night. I think I did read close to 400 pages one night.

Good choice, I love that book. My copy is so beat up and worn, ....its cover is falling off and is held on by a rubber band (same thing with Anne of Green Gables) but I just have to hold onto that copy. Actually, a few months ago I was thinking about re-reading that....

I won't attempt to tell you what Patchwork Planet is about. Here is a quote from the inside cover..."There is no one like Anne Tyler, with her sharp, funny, tender perceptions about how human beings navigate on a puzzling planet." The main character, Barnaby, is 30. He works around old people. His observations and comments about them are uncanny. Anne Tyler's writing style is such that I not only enjoy her but can learn about writing from her. So I'm now reading her latest novel, "Back When We Were Grownups". My advise to you, Bootsy, is to always have a book of short story collections handy. You'll find time to read one reinvigorating story between studies. I also like Dave Barry.

That is an excellent book. I remember reading it in high school. It is one of my favorites. The movie is also really good. It stays pretty close to the book. If you like the book, you should look into watching the movie.

I am currently re-reading the 3rd Harry Potter book. It is my favorite of the 4 so far.

I'm reading "All My Octobers" which is about Mickey Mantle's baseball career, and I'm also reading "Hidden Passions" from the soap opera Passions. Anyone who watches that show I suggest reading it

*Look at me, You may think you see who I really am, but you'll never know me. Every day it's as if I play a part. Now I see if I wear a mask, I can fool the world, but I cannot fool my heart. Who is that girl I see, staring straight back at me? When will my reflection show who I am inside? I am now in a world where I have to hide my heart, and what I believe in. But somehow, I will show the world what's inside my heart, and be loved for who I am. Who is that girl I see, staring straight back at me? Why is my reflection someone I don't know? Must I pretend that I'm someone else, for all time? When will my reflection show who I am inside? There's a heart that must be free to fly. That burns with a need to know the reason why. Why must we all conceal,
what we think, how we feel?
Must there be a secret me, I'm forced to hide? I won't pretend that I'm someone else, for all time. When will my reflection show who I am inside, when will my reflection show who I am inside?*

I'm currently reading "Chick Lit", which is a collection of post-feminist short stories. It's not as good as I had hoped. Serves me right for reading artsy-fartsy stuff.

Next on my shelf is "Peyton Place". Very critically acclaimed novel, and I have not tainted myself by watching the movie or the 1950's TV show, so hopefully that will be enjoyable.

To Coiley2:
Just before 9-11 the entire city of Chicago was being encouraged through newspaper articles, the city council, and others, to read "To Kill a Mockingbird" as a unifying experience. I thought that was an inventive idea. I sent the article (I found it online) to someone that I know from Chicago. Of course, 9-11 put the experiment on the back burner but I hope someone has taken up the torch there as well as other places. In fact, as I'm writing this, I wonder if that wuld be a good idea for this board. One book that everyone would enjoy. We would all read it at the same time. It doesn't matter if you've read it before. Like "Mockingbird" some books are meant to be read again and again. Something to consider. Wouldn't you all say?

kittflynn, sounds like an interesting idea. I have never read Mockingbird. However, I have 4 novels to read for my lit class, not to mention my textbooks in my 3 other classes...and this is all in the 5 weeks remaining of the quarter...not to mention writing papers, which I have about 2 of every week. I'm not complaining, just explaining why there is no way I could even hope to participate in something like this (which I would like to) until probably x-mas break or January. It doesn't help that I am a slow reader. I've gotten faster over the years, but still...
