Charles In Charge - 'A Turtle Experiment'

Charles and Lila are in the kitchen sitting at the table talking.

Lila: I don't know what to do.
Charles: About what?
Lila: I met these new girls at the mall today.
Charles: That's nice.
Lila: Well, there's a problem.
Charles: What?
Lila: They're not in junior high. They're in high school.
Charles: Oh.
Lila: They're cool.
Charles: I see.
Lila: I want to be friends with them.
Charles: What's wrong with that?
Lila: Well, I might have to give up the friends I already have in order to be friends with them.
Charles: Lila, you shouldn't have to do that.
Lila: You don't understand Charles. I want to be popular.
Charles: Are you willing to hurt your friends in order to be popular? That doesn't sound like you Lila.

Jason and Douglas come in the front door.

Douglas: I'm just asking to do a simple experiment here.
Jason: Yeah, with my turtle.
Douglas: I'm not going to kill him or anything. I just want to see how fast his reactions to certain stimuli are.
Jason: No, you leave my turtle alone. Find another turtle for your experiment.
Douglas: All I'm asking for is half an hour, tops.
Jason: Forget it.

Charles and Lila come out of the kitchen.

Charles: What are you two up to?
Jason: Douglas wants to do an experiment on my turtle.
Charles: What kind of experiment?
Douglas: A simple one.
Jason: Tell that to the turtle.
Charles: You don't want Douglas to do the experiment?
Jason: No, I keep telling him that.
Charles: Douglas, I think you need to find another turtle or something else to do.
Douglas: But, Charles...

Mr. and Mrs. Pembroke come downstairs.

Mrs. Pembroke: All I'm asking is to come with you.
Mr. Pembroke: Jill, you would be bored.
Mrs. Pembroke: Stan, you're forgetting that I go on business trips and attend business meetings for my job.
Mr. Pembroke: It's not the same thing Jill.
Mrs. Pembroke: I promise I won't get bored.
Mr. Pembroke: What about two years ago? You said then that you wouldn't be bored. Five hours after we arrived you were so bored that you started drawing while humming, during a meeting.
Mrs. Pembroke: I couldn't help it. The guy kept going on and on about the same thing.
Mr. Pembroke: He was making a point.
Mrs. Pembroke: For three hours?

Mrs. Pembroke looks over at Jason. She sees the box he's holding.

Mrs. Pembroke: What do you have in that box?
Jason: A turtle.
Douglas: Yeah, and I'm going to do an experiment on it!
Jason: Oh no you're not!

Jason runs upstairs with the box. Douglas runs after him.
Mr. Pembroke looks at Lila.

Mr. Pembroke: Lila, is everything ok?
Lila: Not really.
Mrs. Pembroke: What's wrong?
Lila: I'm sort of having a crisis.
Mr. Pembroke: Crisis? I don't have time for a crisis. I'm leaving in twenty minutes.

Mr. Pembroke looks at Charles. He walks over to where Charles is.

Mr. Pembroke: Charles, I'm only 35 years old. My daughter's only 14. She can't be having a crisis if you're in charge. Do you understand what I'm telling you?
Charles: I think so sir. You're telling me that whatever the problem is needs to be resolved by the time you return.
Mr. Pembroke: Exactly.
Mrs. Pembroke: I--

Jason and Douglas come running downstairs. Jason is carrying Douglas's alien mask. Jason tries to escape into the kitchen, but Charles catches him.

Douglas: I want my mask back.
Jason: Not until you promise you will leave my turtle alone.
Douglas: It's just a turtle.
Jason: Oh yeah? Well, this is just a mask.
Douglas Just a mask? Just a mask!

Douglas grabs the mask from Jason and puts it on.

Douglas: I must go and hide from the Earthlings. (laughs)

Douglas tries to go into the front hall closet. Charles walks over to him.

Charles: Please leave Jason's turtle alone. He's your brother after all. You should respect his feelings.
Douglas: All right. I guess I can find another turtle. Jason, I'm sorry. Will you help me find another turtle?
Jason: Ok, I'll help you.

They both go out the front door.

Charles: Well, that's one problem solved, two to go.
Mr. Pembroke? There are still two other problems?
Charles: Well, yes sir. See there's the problem Lila's having and then the problem you and Mrs. Pembroke are having.
Mrs. Pembroke: I think I'll stay here. Mr. Pembroke's right. I'll probably be bored if I go.
Mr. Pembroke: I will tell you all about my trip when I get back.

Mr. and Mrs. Pembroke go back upstairs.
Lila and Charles sit on the couch.

Charles: Lila, the decision is ultimately, yours, but remember the consequences might not be worth the sacrifice.
Lila: But, Charles, the girls I met at the mall are a lot cooler.
Charles: Just because they're in high school doesn't make them cooler than you or any of your friends that are in junior high. Soon enough you will be in high school.
Lila: If the new girls decide to be friends with me I'll be that much cooler in September.
Charles: Just because you met these new girls doesn't mean you have to ditch the friends you already have. Maybe you'll be friends with the new girls and maybe you won't. Is it really worth it though to risk ending up without any friends? Some of your friends you've known for years. You all have a lot in common. You have memories. You just want to give that all up?
Lila: No.
Charles: Why can't you be friends with the new girls and still remain friends with your other friends?
Lila: Because, what if these girls don't like the friends I have?
Charles: Then perhaps they're not worth being around and getting to know then.
Lila: Maybe you're right. If it means I have to give up my friends to get new ones, than forget it.
Charles: I think you've come to a very wise decision.
Lila: Thanks Charles.

wow...that was a really great story. I loved it. You had the characterizations down totally. I kept waiting for Buddy to appear. You can't have a CiC fic without Buddy. LOL. Anyway, good job. I hope you write more.
