Default Eliza Jane & Laura at the Seminar

Hi LHOTP fans,

I have a question regarding an episode I saw this evening. Laura and Eliza Jane went to a Seminar in the city and were sharing a room to keep down expenses. Eliza Jane was interested in the Professor and thought Laura was trying to prevent them from being together.

A friend sent some daisies to their room and signed the card "A Secret Admirer." Eliza Jane assumed they were from the Professor and she approaches him after class one day. She is talking to the Professor about receiving the flowers and his wife walks in. He excuses himself to leave with his wife and Eliza Jane turns and asks "You did send the flowers, didn't you?" He tells her he does not know what she's talking about.

Does it seems odd that she would make such a direct comment in front of his wife? She knew he was married at that moment (if not before) so why would she ask such a thing right in front of his wife? It just seems really odd.

Did she know that was his wife? I am trying to remember the episode, but it's been a while since I seen that one.

Thanks for responding.

I believe she knew because the woman walked in, saw them talking and said "(Whatever his name is) I didn't know you were in a conference." Eliza Jane turned and then kept talking to him and then he said something to the effect of "my wife is waiting." That is what really shocked me. She kept talking about getting flowers from him as if his wife was not standing there. It seems odd to say that openly even if she didn't know the other woman was his wife. She was still there as a student and he was a Professor which would have made a personal relationship unethical. It just seemed really strange for her to blurt it out, especially in front of his wife.

If that's the case, then yeah, certainly strange indeed. I will have to catch that episode next time it airs.

Eliza Jane was a desperate lady and I think that was her downfall. She would do such inappropriate things when it came to men. LOL

Remember when she fell in love with Harv? She mistook his friendship for love. She ended up telling her brother and Laura that she was marrying him just so she could have a reason to leave Walnut Grove and Laura could have her teaching position. Remember how she just went looking for Harv in Sleepy Eye and blurted out I LOVE YOU? Desperate lady.

I know! I thought it was just me. lol That was SO weird. I didn't like the way she made up this elaborate story about leaving so Laura could have the teaching job, they could have the house and her brother didn't have to worry. If I had a sister who did not have basic social skills, I would be worried too! She claimed she could take care of herself but I don't know about that.

I went to a thrift store this afternoon and found three of the the books. I am so excited! I hope to find more.

Thanks again.

I actually didn't think that the woman was his wife, I thought it was just another student, or some fling...

Might go recheck that episode.

Yep, just checked he said I really can't keep Miss Powers waiting, not his wife, and Eliza Jane would not have suspected anything between the professor and Miss Powers

I haven't seen that episode in ages, but it does seem weird that she would be so foreword; especially in that era. I have the books too. I tried to check them out from our library, but the library doesn't carry them (that's such a crime!), so one of my best friends actually scoured her attic for hers and sent them to me! How sweet was that?!

When she first appeared on the show I thought she was Almanzo's mother. I did not realize that she was his sister. She did lack social skills for sure. I felt bad for her but then during her visits during the 81-82 season, she was kind of annoying and a slight bit overbearing. I wanted to tell her to give it a rest.

This episode was on today, so I paid attention to Eliza's meeting with the professor. When the lady came in, she was referred to as Miss Powers. His name was Westehoff, and she was "Miss" Powers. That wasn't his wife, adding more to the fact that he was a cad.

Also, at the end, Laura asked for a one-way train ticket to Walnut Grove because she was going home. I didn't know a train ran through Walnut Grove!

That was one of my least favorite episodes. I found it almost as boring as "Halloween Dream" - which is no mean feat!!!

What I always wanted to know about that episode was since the Professor didn't care that she was married in his wish to pursue her, why didn't she tell him she was pregnant? That sure would have scared him off. lol

Laura found out she was pregnant in season 7 episode 159 in I Do, Again this episode where they go to the seminar is episode number 166 in season 8.

If he was the cad that we think he was(and he was!), even that wouldn't have stopped him.
