THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES and "Li'l Abner" - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Does anyone remember the classic comic strip "Li'l Abner"? Al Capp, the
creator of that strip, was not at all pleased with THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES. He
claimed it was simply a knock-off of his popular comic strip. And, to even a
casual observer, one has to admit there are some striking similarities between
Abner/Jethro, Daisy Mae/Elly May, and Mammy Yokum/Granny. There might
even be a little bit of General Bullmoose in banker Milburn Drysdale. Anyone
have any thoughts about this?

"Li'l Abner" ran from 1934 to 1977. Capp retired on Nov. 13, 1977, two years
before his own death. The strip has endured, though, through book reprints.
Many consider Capp one of the creative geniuses in comic strips.

There were also two movies, a long-running Broadway musical, a hit song from
said musical ("Jublilation T. Cornpone"), a series of Columbia cartoons, and
much tie-in merchandise during the strip's heyday.
