Florida Congressman Mark Foley stoicly and shamefully resigned from the U.S. House yesterday after it was made public that he had been sending sexually explicit "Instant Messenger" messages to an underage boy who was a congressional page. Adding insult to injury, the congressman was a leader in the House Caucus for Missing and Exploited Children.

His immediate resignation, while not legal proof of guilt, is proof enough for me. What I am really confused about however, is that the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children is giving Foley a GLOWING REVIEW in light of his resignation:

“Congressman Mark Foley’s resignation is a loss to Florida and the nation. He has been a hard-working, dedicated and effective Congressman."

I should make a correction: I said that he "stoicly" resigned, but I believe the footage I saw was a clerk reading his resignation or something, as I saw his picture later and he had suddenly grown a full head of hair! However, it's still shameful!

NCMEC is not privy to the specific facts of the case and thus, it is inappropriate for NCMEC to comment or speculate about them.

Child sexual exploitation via the Internet has become an enormous problem, reaching into every aspect of society. It is imperative that every person become more vigilant and that we enhance steps to keep children safe online.

Congressman Foley has been an effective and dedicated Member of Congress. Nonetheless, if it is determined that he has engaged in acts which have harmed children or put them in jeopardy, like any other person, he must be held accountable. If he has violated the law, he should be prosecuted."

I guess so many people hounded them that they had to change their position. I hope they realize how idiotic their statement was. I'm just not sure it's enough to save face at this point.
