Default So why is Tony Randall on Nixon's enemy list?

Anyone know what he did? I don't remember reading about him being that involved in politics

The only thing I remember about Tony Randall involved with that could be considered political was his involvement in the anti-smoking campaign during the 70's. I remember him doing a commercial encouraging people to give up smoking as he had. He became a staunch non-smoker and was very vocal about his disdain for cigarettes. I even remember reading at the time that on the Odd Couple set he had established a non-smoking policy (Oscar's cigars excluded of course) that no smoking was to occur during filming of the show while he was present.

In "Tony and Me" I remember Jack Klugman saying something about that. I guess Nixon was a fan of smoking

I don't know being a fan smoking, but his career sure went down in flames.

He probably nagged Nixon about cleaning his room...

Default Committed liberal

Randall was a great activist in many liberal causes, notably at that time, the anti-war movement. He was involved in events like teach-ins and poetry readings for peace. Those appearances probably led to his inclusion on the list. When the list was made public, Jack Klugman commented that he was very proud of Randall, and the fact that Klugman himself was not on the list meant that he was not doing enough. Late in life, Randall joked that he fantasized about President Bush and Vice-President Cheney trying to come to his funeral and being turned away.

Ok, well that looks like it explains it. I am glad they did't talk politics on the show because I probbably wouldn't watch it if they did

Ah, that's so cool. I never knew that. Now I have even more respect for Mr. Randall than I did before.

I wonder why John Lennon isn't on that list??

I remember reading that when Randall appeared as a celebrity guest on The $20,000 Pyramid in the 1970's, he complained about announcer Bob Clayton smoking behind the scenes. Also there's an episode where he and Dick Cavett played the winner's circle together. One of the categories was "Characteristics of Tony Randall." The first thing Cavett said was "fussy about smoking." Randall immediately said, "Me." I knew that he disliked smoking, but not that much. That's interesting to know.

There was even a documentary about this called The U.S. Vs. John Lennon.
